Garage Willie

04/05/06
.
(conqueroo) Willie Nile, whose career has received a boost from the buzz about his new Streets of New York album, has racked up yet more kudos. The song "Welcome To My Head," which kicks off Nile's album, was designated the “Coolest Song in the World” on Little Steven's “Underground Garage” syndicated radio show and the album itself was cited as the No. 1 “Coolest Garage Album” on Steven's new Coolest Garage Songs chart in Billboard magazine.

Singer/guitarist Little Steven, known of course for his work with Bruce Springsteen, his own Disciples of Soul, and his acting gig on The Sopranos, spearheads Sirius Satellite Radio’s “Underground Garage” (channel 25), playing the “coolest rock ’n’ roll records ever made, whether they’re 50 years old or 50 minutes old.”

Nile, whose critically acclaimed new album was featured in March on NPR’s “Weekend Edition Sunday,” has been friends with Little Steven through the years. Nile joined Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band live onstage a number of times on their last tour. In October 2003, he played the last two E Street dates at Shea Stadium in front of 60,000 people, singing with both the Boss and Little Steven.

Nile opened the show for the latter's "Concert for CBGB" held in New York's Washington Square Park, where he was introduced by Steven and CBGB owner Hilly Kristal.

Little Steven had even said: “Willie Nile is so good, I can’t believe he’s not from Jersey.”

Still, the citation came as a surprise to Nile, who was playing seven steamy shows at SXSW when Billboard published the Garage charts.

According to Nile, “I love Little Steven’s ‘Underground Garage’ radio show. I love the music that he plays and it’s an honor to be included among all those great songs. To have Streets of New York as No. 1 on his ‘Coolest Garage Songs’ list is too much. I think God listens to the Underground Garage. I know the Godfather does. Maybe it’ll get me a good seat up in Cool Heaven. Thank you Steven.”
