The F**king Champ Makes Nice

(PR) The freakbeat power-pop trio The Makes Nice, the group led by Josh Smith, founding guitarist of Drag City instrumetal act The F**king Champs, continues to prove the truth of its name with the announcement that it will play the 10th Anniversary party for Frenetic Records, the label that released both The Makes Nice's debut album Candy Wrapper & Twelve Other Songs and the F**king Champs double album debut ten years ago. The label celebrates its storied history of esoteric and genre-shattering rock on April 7th at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco.

Josh Smith, the unassuming (an unassumingly named) former guitarist and co-founder of Bay Area rock faves The F**king Champs and latter-day Drunk Horse axeman, hung up his heavy rock handle in early 2004, looking to start something refreshing and new. Taking cues from the pop melodies and harmonies of The Zombies, ABBA and Brian Wilson, Smith wanted to fuse that sound to the rollicking rhythms of 60's era R&B along the lines of the 1966 incarnation of Gatemouth Brown's Beat Boys with Freddie King. The guitarist joined up with drummer Jack Matthew and bassist Aaron Burnham to form The Makes Nice. [click the full story to stream the album]
