(PR) Wendy McNeill's journey through the land of imagination continues with her latest release on Six Shooter Records, A Dreamer's Guide to Hardcore Living Out Sept 9th.
With each vocal and accordion exhalation, A Dreamer's Guide to Hardcore Living twists and turns like a sudden breeze over landscapes foreign and familiar, alighting for moments on the everyday only to crash through the looking glass into a world of ssssnakes and castles, white horses and long-haired men.
A Dreamer's Guide to Hardcore Living creates a kingdom governed by decrees of inventive instrumentation, unexpected lyrical imagery and distinctive artistic motifs – Wendy McNeill rules both with velvet glove and iron fist. The accordion is the lung, and its breath is at times shallow and steady, at times gasping for air in wild revelry.
An emphasis on capturing the warmth and energy of her live show (with double bass and cello) led the trio to record in a cozy barn in the south of Sweden. A spring windstorm added to the atmosphere with subtle gusts and the creaking of the barn roof and floorboards.
Engineer and co-producer, Christoffer Lundqvist assisted the trio in adding additional instrumental textures. The fairytale sounds of celesta, toy and tack piano were contrasted with the Balkan-esque feel of Marxophone and zither, then embellished with washes of marimba, timpani, cymbals, bells, and sparse mellotron samples.
A Dreamer's Guide to Hardcore Living will be released on September 9, 2008.
