The genre-defying artist pulls together heavy doses of traditional jazz, Hip-Hop, psychedelic sounds, indian spice, progressive melodies, obscure samples and devastating drums into a rich pot of sound. The vibe is constantly changing from catchy up-tempo b-boy classics, to melodic down-tempo depressants, to heavy beat driven epic masterpieces.
Those of you already at SXSW or planning an imminent arrival will not want to miss Thursday evening's OBEY Records showcase at Barcelona featuring sets from Free The Robots, Diplo, Flying Lotus and much more. Free The Robots will offer a live set filled with tracks from both previous releases and his forthcoming split EP (with The Gaslamp Killer) entitled Killer Robots. Made available to you as a free download, lead track "Clocks And Daggers" sounds like a cross between DJ Shadow and the music to a George Romero zombie movie while "The Bearded Lady Theme" conjures images of our sideshow freaks of yesteryear. The title says it all but the music must be heard!
Free The Robots was started as a side project by Alfaro in 2003 while also playing with different bands, producing MC's, and DJing full time. Having worked with so many different styles of music, Free the Robots brought everything together under one roof while allowing further exploration through sampling. In fact, Alfaro spends hours of his time and lots of money in LA-area record stores thumbing through the crates in search of the ideal sound to sample. To go along with the samples, Alfaro adds other sounds with controllers, and live instruments (keys, guitar, turntables) to keep the blend of sampling and original composition balanced.
In addition to the release of Killer Robots, Free The Robots has appeared on several popular compilations including a DJ Mix CD for OBEY entitled "City To City" and 2007's self-titled original artist EP. Live, Free The Robots has started to make a name for himself for creating an energetic and interactive musical experience. It's not just someone on stage twiddling knobs, but rather a two-man full-production matching turntablism with analog and digital programming.
