(antiMusic) The "Fifth Beatle," Neil Aspinall, died of cancer at the age of 66 on Sunday night in New York City. Aspinall was a longtime friend of the band and began working with them as a driver and eventually ascended to the head of their company Apple Corps Ltd until he resigned last year.

According to Transworldnews "Aspinall's involvement with the Beatles dated from 1960 when the group's original drummer, Pete Best, asked him to become their driver. After Best, Aspinall's best friend, was replaced by Ringo Starr, Aspinall stayed with the band.

AFP adds, "In 1968, he became manager of Apple Corps, reportedly on the condition that he would only do it until they found someone else. He only left the job last year." - Read the AFP report
