David Newman's New Album Coming Next Month
. The album, which was recorded in Woodstock, was coproduced by Newman and Trina Shoemaker, the two-time Grammy Award winner best known for her work with Sheryl Crow and Emmylou Harris. On To Be Home, Newman offers a mix of comforting folk songs in English as well as more traditional Kirtan chant songs in Sanskrit. In the U.S., Newman is responsible for helping to establish this new musical genre. Kirtan singers, or "chant artists," as they are called, blend Western musical sounds and styles with ancient Sanskrit healing mantras. The resulting Kirtan chant is a joyous call-and-response musical form that is often used as an additional devotional element to various styles of yoga. Each cut on To Be Home resonates with a lightheartedness, exuding a refreshingly happy sound that comes together to form a deliberate whole.
