(Gibson) Jerry Leiber, one half of the famous songwriting duo Leiber and Stoller, has died. Rolling Stone reports that Leiber died of cardiopulmonary failure. He was 78.

Leiber and his partner Mike Stoller have their fingerprints on some of the most famous songs in pop and rock and roll history. Among the hits they penned: "Hound Dog," "Stand By Me," "Jailhouse Rock," "Yakety-Yak," "On Broadway," "Searchin'," "Love Potion No. 9" and "Kansas City."

The two songwriters met in 1950, when they were seniors in high school. They bonded over a shared love of pop, R&B and the blues. Leiber and Stoller began writing together, with Jerry handling the lyrics and Mike working on the melodies. By 1953, the duo were among the most in-demand songwriters, having crafted hits for R&B acts such as The Drifters and The Coasters. more on this story
