Shadows Legend Jet Harris Dies

(Gibson) Jet Harris, the original bass player with The Shadows, has died of cancer at age 71, the BBC reports. Before playing with The Shadows and Cliff Richard, Harris was one of the first U.K musicians to play electric bass guitar.

Harris was with The Shadows until 1962 and played on many of their biggest hits including "Apache," a track that inspired a generation of British guitarists from Jimmy Page to Eric Clapton.

Harris still played gigs until recently when he canceled all appearances because of illness. Sir Cliff Richard paid tribute to Jet Harris: "Jet was exactly what The Shadows and I needed a backbone holding our sound together." more on this story
