Unreleased Early Talking Heads Song Goes Online

(Radio.com) Back in 1976, the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl, movies like Rocky and Taxi Driver were big hits on the silver screen, and the Captain and Tennille won the Grammy for Record of the Year with "Love Will Keep Us Together."

That same year, the band Talking Heads was in its nascent stages, crafting songs that would populate the group's debut full-length, Talking Heads: 77, which would come out in the fall of 1977.

As one of the bands that regularly played CBGB, Talking Heads were opening for Television in the summer of 1976 (July 30, to be exact) when they performed this recently unearthed and never before heard instrumental track. Frontman David Byrne tells an inquisitive audience member, "We call it 'Theme,' but then we just keep it to ourselves" (via Slicing Up Eyeballs).

While the Talking Heads are one of the few bands that steadfastly refuses to succumb to the reunion trend (the group split acrimoniously in 1991), the various members remain active in music, with David Byrne recording the album Love This Giant with St. Vincent in 2012. more on this story
