MGMT Taking Different Music Direction On New Album (Recap)

"We're not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it," band member Ben Goldwasser told Rolling Stone about the upcoming full-length, the first since MGMT's divisive sophomore release, Congratulations. Where the group's poppy debut, Oracular Spectacular, spawned such generation-defining singles as "Kids" and "Electric Feel," Congratulations was a much more sprawling and ambitious affair, even recalling conceptual rock icons Pink Floyd on epic (and underrated) songs like "Siberian Breaks." "People thought we took too many drugs, which was not the case at all," Goldwasser explained regarding the muted reaction to MGMT's second album.
