Miike Snow's Andrew Wyatt Recruits 75-Piece Orchestra

05/10/2013
.
(Radio.com) At the risk of sounding pretentious, Andrew Wyatt said he wanted every song on his solo debut to represent a "phase of spiritual growth." Each song becomes one small part of a much larger tale.

Wyatt compares his new record, Descender, to Kate Bush's Hounds of Love. His music certainly doesn't sound like hers, but the intention was the same.

Wyatt, who is also the American frontman for the Swedish pop-trio, Miike Snow, recorded the album in Prague under a one-month deadline, a time constraint that forced him to just make the album and not nitpick over every little detail.

He recruited a 75-member orchestra in the Czech city to help him capture his musical vision–a sound he imagined since he was a kid growing up in New York City going to see jazz pianist Gil Evans with his dad.

"I kind of grew up in a jazz frame of mind," he said. "So orchestration was something I always found fascinating." But it wasn't always easy working with the Czech players.
