(Radio.com) Singer, songwriter and animal rights activist Paul McCartney is diving in to help save the elephants. Rolling Stone reports that McCartney has donated a signed Martin D-28 left-handed guitar to an auction benefiting the Nature Conservancy's African Elephant Initiative. It's available to bidders on eBay with a starting price of $10,000.

For fans who want to support but can't afford that price tag, the initiative is also accepting donations. McCartney personalized the guitar with not only his autograph, but a note reading, "This guitar saves elephants."

A statement on Martin guitars' website announcing their partnership with the initiative explains, "It's estimated that there were 1.2 million elephants in Africa in 1980. Now there are only about 430,000, with an estimated 20,000 elephants killed last year alone." more on this story
