They painted images from dreams that were thought to be a mix of memory and sense impressions that unlocked something of a person's soul. Whether it be a statement from the artist or the impression it made on the viewer of the art, it was meant to be a revealing sort of thing. It was seen by the artists as philosophical movement. So here, Imagine Dragons clearly want to use the music on their new album to tap into your unconscious feelings. The imagery is simply a means of beating you about the head with that idea.
