Independence Day 2 Casts Jeff Goldblum But Not Will Smith
. (Radio.com) Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum are now confirmed to star in Independence Day 2, set to hit theaters June 24, 2016. The fact that you can still watch the original 1996 blockbuster any day of the week on basic cable may have something to do with Dreamworks' decision to make a followup. The original Independence Day, after all, grossed over $800 million. Frankly, it's stunning it took them this long. While Hemsworth is a new addition to cast, Goldblum will return as David Levinson, the MIT grad-turned-cable-TV technician. Director Roland Emmerich, who also helmed the first film, revealed the casting with a photo of Hemsworth and Goldbloom. "Excited to officially announce @LiamHemsworth and #JeffGoldblum as the next two pieces of the #IndependenceDay sequel!" he wrote. The story takes place in an "alternate present-day reality, where humanity has spent the last two decades harvesting the alien technology featured in the first movie," reports Screenrant. According to the New York Daily News, 'Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name." Read more and see the announcement here.
