Singled Out: Gus McArthur's Harlot's Kiss
.
Honan The Destroyer lead guitarist of Gus McArthur gives some insight to their first single "Harlot's Kiss, off their new studio EP "Chapter 1: Hysterics". Here is the story: Harlot's kiss is a sequel to one of our original songs "Succubus" about an evil women who drains her lover of everything leaving him broken and hopeless. A downward spiral that examines the emotional carnage that can come from a bad relationship, Harlot's Kiss is written from the point of view one of the Succubus victims, voiced in his own conscience agonizing how to escape her. The songs counterpoint is the Succubus inner voice mocking him as well, resulting in a pretty evil vibe to the whole track. In the final vocals the victim comes to the realization that he needs to leave her, but it's just too late to escape. What influenced me to write this song was the relationships I've seen and experienced where someone derives pleasure in another's pain. I've seen from both sexes this kind of evil enjoyment out of making someone else's life miserable and it's something I'll truly never comprehend. As far as recording goes Harlot's Kiss was the easiest because we all have so much fun playing it, even though guitar and drum wise it's one of our more difficult songs to play. It's the only song that used any midi; granted only for the first 30 seconds, the initial eeriness of the song has a significant impact and is an element we would like to incorporate more in future chapters. The theme of Gus McArthur, chapter one, is Hysterics. The power hungry, what drives them, how they manipulate, and ultimately how they control others to meet their own ends. Harlot's Kiss is the first single because it takes this subject head on based on individuals but be ready because other songs on the EP are a statement on the Hysteria in our mad mad world. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
