(Radio.com) As Shawn Mendes basks in the release of his new album Illuminate, he stopped by James Corden's studio and started an argument as old as time: Is music better today than it's ever been? Or are the best songs throwbacks that have stood the test of time? The opening to Mendes' high school position paper was not promising:

"I just noticed you never play new music," said Mendes. "You know, Backstreet Boys yesterday. 'This is How We Do It.' It's just like old stuff all the time."

"Everybody knows music was better back then than it is now," Corden shot back. "I should warn you -- I've got hits from before you were born." From there, the pair engaged in a music battle of today's hits (Mendes) and yesterday's classics (Corden). Mendes sang contemporary favorites like "This Is What You Came For" and "Cheap Thrills" while Corden busted out his favorite Spice Girls song, "Wannabe." Ultimately, Corden and Mendes bonded over one song everybody can appreciate-- TLC's "No Scrubs." Who can argue with that? Check it out here.
