Singled Out: Roger Street Friedman's Everyday

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Roger Street Friedman just released his brand new album "Shoot The Moon" and to celebrate we asked him to tell us about the track "Everyday". Here is the story:

"Everyday" came about, like many of my songs do, when I was just strumming my guitar with my red cutaway capo on the 4th fret. It gives the guitar this really nice open sound and I started strumming the main riff in the key of E.

As I was strumming, the words "I'm alright� most of the time" popped into my head and I kind of blocked out the chorus and came up with the chord pattern for the verses.

It all stopped there for a while until I was out riding my bicycle one morning and the bridge popped into my consciousness. I stopped and wrote it down in my phone, and when I got back to my home studio put the arrangement together. The rest of the chorus also came to me then - "it's just me in the way." So I had a chorus and a bridge but no lyrics for verses and that's where I left it.

Later that summer when my band moved into the studio for the basic tracking sessions for "Shoot The Moon," we had 12 songs on the list. We spent four days in a row tracking and then at the end of the last day I pulled out this tune. Everyone was sorta ready to go home, and we were all kind of fried, but Frank (Ferarra the stellar electric guitar player and de-facto musical director) wrote a quick chart and we did three or four takes of the arrangement with me singing the choruses and humming the verses. The energy was so great I knew we had something really special. When I sat down to finish the song it came to me that it was about doing the best I can every day, and just trying to get out of my own way. I mean, most of the time we put up our own obstacles to happiness or success. It's all in how we respond to the trials and tribulations that life throws at us. This song is a reminder to myself (and an invitation to everyone) to choose the path that leads us toward happiness and then just keep putting one foot in front of the other...
