The concert was stopped during Pearl Jam's seventh song after several fans lost their balance and were trampled upon by the crowd surging towards the stage. Some contribute the incident to mud caused by rainy weather. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vetter at that point asked fans to take three steps back from the stage. Tragically, it was too late.
The Cure were scheduled to play following Pearl Jam's set, but festival organizers canceled the show. Both the Pet Shop Boys and Oasis who were to play the following night cancelled their appearances as well.
Members
of Pearl Jam, shaken by the incident cancelled their remaining European
dates and issued the following statement on their web site.
Copenhagen,
Denmark - This is so painful...I think we are all waiting for someone to
wake us and say it was just a horrible nightmare.
And there are absolutely no words to express our anguish in regard to the parents and loved ones of these precious lives that were lost.
We have not yet been told what actually occurred, but it seemed to be random and sickeningly quickit doesn't make sense.
When you agree to play at a festival of this size and reputation it is impossible to imagine such a heart-wrenching scenario.
Our lives will never be the same, but we know that is nothing compared to the grief of the families and friends of those involved.
It is so tragic ... there are no words.
Devastated,
--Pearl Jam
