The Bahamas authorities still have not concluded their investigation of the fatal crash that cost the lives of nine people. During an autopsy of the pilot, Luis Morales III, it was discovered that he had cocaine in his urine as well as alcohol in his stomach. Authorities have not yet announced the amount of the substances that were found in his system and how they might have affected the pilot.
It was discovered after the crash that
the pilot, Morales, had pleaded no contest to cocaine possession in a Florida
court just twelve days before the fatal crash. Morales was sentenced to
three years probation and was supposed to have his pilots license revoked
due to the conviction but authorities had not yet done so at the time of
the crash.
Whether drugs and alcohol played a key
role in causing the crash is still unknown, authorities are also looking
into other causes. It is believed that the airplay may have failed because
the aircraft had not undergone routine maintenance and required modifications
to the fuel pump and fueling system. Another suspected cause is the fact
that authorities believe the aircraft was flying at 700 pounds over its
maximum weight capacity. Authorities said that the aircraft was certified
to carry only 8 passengers and Aaliyahs plane was carrying 9 people as
well as the heavy equipment needed to film a music video.
