Autumn Black Interview Review

by Mike Rapin

.
This entire album makes me love what I do simply because good music in such a popular genre of music come few and far between, and I will say that Autumn Black's Beneath The Shadows has impressed me enough to say "wow." Here is my email conversation with the band about the album.

antiMusic: I'd like to start things with a typical band question: How do you guys pull your music together? Is it mainly a group effort or is it a per person kind of deal where some songs come from one member and others come from another?

Albert: We all work as a team to create the groove of the music. We like to produce each song with its own identity. We don't like songs that sound or resemble each other.

antiMusic: Mainly aimed at Mr. Ruben Platt: How do you come up with lyrics?

Ruben: How I like to write and create the lyrics is by personal experiences in my life.

antiMusic: To keep with the "how does your band work" type of questions, what kind of music drives you guys to do what you do as a band? And on top of that, what kind of music do you guys like to go out and see (when you're not on tour of course)?

Ruben: We are all diverse in music. We listen to everything from Johnny Cash to Depeche Mode. We all have a different background in musical taste. We are all open to listen to new art. What drives us is our love for our music and our love for one another. We want to bring our music to the masses and take out the hip/hop and pop era. If we can!!! We love to see shows and support touring bands as well as the local scene. It could be from trance music to 80's to punk to indie to the hardest metal music ever.

antiMusic: Speaking of on tour (what a transition!), do any of you, or all of you, have any type of rituals you perform before a show? (Don't worry, I don't frown upon slaughtering a baby or anything like that.)

Chris: We all have no rituals but we strive in warming up before we play. We take it seriously when we are performing. I practice and warm up on my practice pads while albert( bassist)& Jon (guitar) warm up on their guitars with ruben( Guitar/vocals). After a quick warm up we just relax as Ruben and Andrew( Vocals) warm up their vocals doing their routine exercises.

antiMusic: As a band in a somewhat bloated scene of heavy, hardcore music, how do you guys manage to rise up against the competition?

Andrew: We have a distinct and different sound than many others. We rely on our diversity in music. We don't try to emulate someone else's sound like everyone else is doing especially the scenester bands. We manage to rise above the rest by sticking together as a family and bringing it every night. We see each other as a fist that will hit you in the mouth and knock you out unconsciously with our music.

antiMusic: On tour, have you guys had any real crazy happenings? Such as, insane fans chasing you down, or a run in with killer-pigs?

Jon: Not really. All our fans kick ass!!! Hopefully, it would be cool to run into something crazy in the near future. But we dont see that happening.

antiMusic: Just a random question, where are you guys all from and how did you all meet?

Albert: We are all from different areas. My twin brother(RUBEN) and I are from San Diego, Jonathan is from Arcata, Ca(Northern California), Christopher is from Twin falls, Idaho and Andrew is from Los Angeles, Ca. The twins met Jon in college and soon met Chris in L.A. Soon after met Andrew to join.

antiMusic: Individually, what kinds of food makes you guys run?

Chris: Little caesar's $5.00 Pizza

Albert: eat everything but stomach very sensitive

Ruben: eat everything but stomach very sensitive

Jon: Double Decker from Taco Bell

Andrew: Ramen Noodles

antiMusic: Do any of you guys have any special talents (outside of kicking the ass out of your respective instruments of course)? Maybe some secret haircutting skill or a World Of Warcraft passion?

Jonathan: Degree in Psychology/Chef/ Black Belt in RANDOM TRIVIA

Albert: Degree in Cell/Molecular Biology(pre-med) degree/Owner of Business/ LOVER EXTROADINAIRE

Ruben: Degree in Cell/Molecular Biology(pre-med) degree/Owner of Business/ TRUCK DRIVER IN PAST LIFE (Can drive 24 hours straight)

Christopher: Professional Razor Scooter/ Model/Amateur botanists

Andrew: Man of Mystery / Entrepreneur/ Hair Coloring Skill

We are all big dorks!!!!

antiMusic: Outside of Autumn Black, are you (or have you ever been) in any other bands?

Chris: No, this is our priority!!!!

antiMusic: Speaking again to Andrew, how do you manage to keep your screams up on tour?

Andrew: I warm up with Ruben. We exercise our vocals so we wont lose our sound, tone and pitch. I also stay away from things that would injure my vocals. Such as certain foods, smoking environments and weather.

antiMusic: Are you guys big TV fans? If so, what are your favorites to watch and why?

Jon: We really don't have time to watch T.V. But when we do We love to watch the Family Guy, Simpsons, Dave Chapelle show, The News, The Myth Busters, ESPN, History channel and National Geographic.

antiMusic: Who would you say was your favorite band to tour with since you have been together?

GROUP: ALL HAVE BEEN AWESOME WE LOVE YOU ALL!!!!

antiMusic: Real quick, top 10 movies you guys love to watch as a group:

1.SpaceBalls
2.BoonDock Saints

4.Braveheart
5.Sixteen Candles
6.The Wall
