Fjord Rowboat - Saved the Compliments for Morning Review

by Patrick Muldowney

.
How does love sound? Does it sound like the sky, a baritone, monotone voice, rhythms for a dark, long highway drive? Who the hell could ever claim to know what love sounds like, yet Saved the Compliments for Morning at least occupies the world of lovely.

The best part of Fjord Rowboat's sound is it refuses to get bogged down. The tempo, often at allegro, keeps each song in the 3-5 minute range, which is undoubtedly enough time for 99.9% of tracks to deliver the sound and significance, although many tracks behave like an unwelcome stay. "Shootin' The Breeze", a wonderful moment, possesses lyrical skills akin to Adam Franklin, although Disintegration seems to be at work musically. The life of each track, which leaves Saved the Compliments... on level ground (singles/standouts are difficult to locate) and possibly becomes a benefit and detriment to the overall experience, can be attributed to a proper meshing of influences who range from Curve to Hum.

Mainstream is currently missing out on a Golden Age. The so-called "Shoegaze" music moves better than tight-jeaned glammo, and rocks harder than the self-gratuitous guitar and piano contemporaries fighting for ad space. Find Fjord Rowboat, and then rescue the other artists floating in obscurity.

Tracks added to iPod: Carried Away, Can't See the Sun, Shootin' The Breeze, Taking the Pass, Turn the Mirror Round
