The Puppini Sisters - Betcha Bottom Dollar Review

by Sherrill Fulghum

.
Bologna, Italy native Marcella Puppini moved to London to make her mark in the fashion world and instead ended up attending the Trinity College of Music. While at Trinity Marcella met Stephanie O'Brien and Kate Mullins. When Marcella decided to form her own group she turned to class mates the red headed Stephanie who began performing at an early age and hard rocker Kate to join her.

It is from Marcella that the group takes its name of The Puppini Sisters. In forming the group Marcella followed her love of the close harmonies found in the music of the forties. The Puppini Sisters are the modern day incarnation of The Andrews or McGuire Sisters much like Brian Setzer and the Stray Cats did with Rock-a-Billy music during the eighties; so are the Puppini Sisters only the music of a decade earlier.

"Betcha Bottom Dollar" is a collection of cover tunes mostly from the standards era. The two exceptions are the disco hit "I Will Survive" and the Blondie hit "Heart of Glass" both of which are performed in the close harmony musical style of the forties.

"Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" was first popular during the war year but in the hands of the Puppini Sister it is still a hit, as are all the songs on the album.

"Betcha Bottom Dollar" is another one of those albums that spans the generation. The instrumentation is kept to a minimum so that the close harmonies of the girls voices can be heard something seldom found in today's music.
