Young Modern highlights another progression in Silverchairs music as they've been maturing and expanding their sound since their first record dropped. The feel of this disc is still rock but slightly mellower and generally not as raw. There are 11 songs in the collection with a few of the standout tunes being Young Modern Station, Straight Lines and the epic type 7 and a half minute song called Those Thieving Birds. Many of the die hard fans of older Silverchair may be disappointed at first due to the fact that this disc doesn't sound like their music of the 90's and they are not ready to go back to their roots just yet. That will come later on in their career after they've had a couple mediocre albums and they feel like their losing their popularity. Then they will put out a record and advertise it as a disc where they are going back to their roots, kinda like Metallica does on each new album they put out. In my opinion this is a solid album and demonstrates a more refined and polished music than they've put out in the past. I understand that this may be the exact reason some fans turn their nose up at it but without some experimentation and change any band starts to sound boring.
All in all Silverchair still has game. Johns vocals are excellent and the group shows that they can still craft tunes that are attractive and stick in your head. I'm in no way saying this music is in anyway better than their older music but in my eyes it's an expected progression that they seem to have welcomed and developed into a praiseworthy album.
