The Last Goodnight - Poison Kiss Review

by J Simpson

The Last Goodnight is a 5 piece powerpop glam band hailing from Enfield, Connecticut. The group was originally called Renata which started forming when the members were still back in high school. Not long after Renata started seriously writing music and playing at a variety of different venues they began getting recognized and in 2006 the Hartford Advocate named them 2003's Best Original Rock band. The next big break the group got was being signed to Virgin Records/Capitol Music Group in 2006. It's not clear but I believe it was somewhere around this time that they changed their name from Renata to The Last Goodnight. In 2007 they released their first major collection of original songs, the disc being called Poison Kiss.

Poison Kiss is very friendly straight forward bubble gum pop music that's danceable and easy to listen too. Most of the songs including the ballads are more tempo or rhythm driven without any heavy piano or guitar leads. It's a 12 track collection and although there's nothing truly amazing on it most of the songs hold their own. A couple of my favorite tunes off the album would be the title track which starts off the disc and maybe Pictures of You or Good Love with a little more up tempo but simple chorus.

You could make an argument that this album may be slightly overproduced but hey its their first try and they have room to grow. You could also make a comparison of The Last Goodnight's music to 80's pop music and it would be intellectually impossible not to compare them to the popular Maroon 5 but not quite as advanced or edgy. Make no mistake, as I stated before there is not a whole lot of originality on this album but what this band does it does well.
