The Ike Reilly Assassination - We Belong to the Staggering Evening Review

by Gary Schwind

.
The album kicks off with an old-style romp that sounds kind of like 60s garage. The hard-hit drums, the fuzzy guitars, the raspy vocals (not unlike a young Rod Stewart) and the rolling piano meld together for a sound that reminds me more of bands that put out albums forty years ago.

From that initial garage sound, the band takes a turn toward the honky-tonk with "Valentine's Day in Juarez." Although this isn't your typical honky-tonk song. The singer says, "Yesterday I smoked, today I don't." Then he catalogs various substances (cocaine, oxycontin, mushrooms, marijuana and vodka) that one could find in Juarez if one were so inclined.

"Who says you can't toss a fish at a president?" in "Fish Plant Uprising." This is another song with frenetic fuzzy guitars, and harmonica similar to Eric Oblander of Five Horse Johnson.

"It's Hard To Make Love an American" catalogs not only lots of different American places, but also the things getting in the way of singer making love to his girl.
