It's a great feat to come off as relevant and original in this day and age of regurgitated music creation and truth be told, Mighty Fairly has managed to accomplish this goal.
Mighty Fairly's album is loaded with bright vocals and contagious hooks. What so nice is that this band doesn't have any pent up angst or rage, their lyrics are strong, matter-of- fact, and punchy, but blessedly, not obtrusive or whiny. It's almost like listening to Blink 182 subdued and on valium.
Frontman, lead vocal, and songwriter Mischa Suemnig has a deliciously melodic voice which blends effortlessly with co-vocalist and bassist Kellie Nitz. The pair's harmonies are richly textured, dripping in honey and splashed across a velvety background of perfectly punctuated background support. Joseph Papke round s out the foursome with impeccable timekeeping that isn't overbearing. His restrained and discipline drumming, seemingly innocuous, adds layers and depth to the band's sound.
The opening track, "Falling to Pieces" along with tracks "Alaska", "Save Your Love", and "Left You in a Ruin" best illustrate the tight, on point vocal relationship Suemnig and Nitz possess. Lyrically, listening to them is like playing in candyland, where everything is light and fluffy on the surface but strangely complex the deeper you go.
"Save Your Love" is one of my favorite tracks, lyrics like Save Your love/for someone whose worth hurting for/ are hard to escape and conjure up the many fruitless endeavours love throws your way. The result is a beautiful, simple, harmonious explosion. "Shadow" is a timeless narrative, and has some funky effects interspersed throughout.
If you are looking for some pure indie pop sound check this band out.
