Sevendust - Cold Day Memory

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
For a band that makes such a loud noise, Sevendust has quietly proven to be survivors. Cold Day Memory is the band's eighth studio album and it's kind of a wonder that the guys were able to cut the record at all considering that their career has been a non-stop parade of serious problems including label disputes, member changes, numerous deaths among family and close friends and a financial debacle that left them broke and in hock up to their necks. A lesser group, one without Sevendust's handful of hits including Top 10's like "Enemy" and "Driven" would have imploded long ago. If you watch the bonus DVD that comes with Cold Day Memory, a "the making of" film, you'll see that the members of Sevendust are pretty humble at this point---they've met their problems head on, for the most part beaten them, and are convinced that their best days are still to come. Original guitarist Clint Lowery is back in the group and everybody's happy about that and the group has not made any significant changes to their sound. Sevendust remains one of the heavier nu-metal bands on mainstream radio and they've wisely not tampered with the formula that got them there in the first place. Lowery occasionally reels off a flashy solo during the melodic portions of songs like on "The End is Coming" but the Sevendust hallmark is the vocal work of Lajon Witherspoon who alternately screams and croons over the bass-n-drum bombast of Vince Hornsby and Morgan Rose. That familiar roar already has Sevendust back on the radio in the form of the single "Unraveling." If you consider that acts like AC/DC have been going strong for forty years by recycling their own riffs you can't really blame a group like Sevendust for doling out more of the same old-same old here, especially since it's something that works out nicely for them regardless of other circumstances.
