Iggy Pop - Roadkill Rising... The Bootleg Collection 1977-2009

There's really only one certainty when it comes to attending an Iggy Pop concert---nothing is for certain. The material on this 4-CD set is culled from over 20 concerts spanning several decades and the set list, 68 songs deep, will definitely please fans that are into more than the hits. All the biggies are here; early underground favorites like "Raw Power," "No Fun," "Search and Destroy" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" mingle with FM radio standards like "Lust For Life," "Candy" and "Real Wild Child" but with nearly four hours of music on tap the bulk of the music here comes from deep album cuts. Each of the four discs presents recordings from a particular decade; the '70s disc holds surprises like a take on the title cut from the New Values album, a version of "Gloria" that's for the most part not a version of "Gloria" since Pop changes most of the words, including spelling out I-G-G-Y POP instead of G-L-O-R-I-A, and a chilling rendition of the junkie moan, "Turn Blue." Everything here is previously unreleased and taken from bootleg recordings so among the massive set are cuts that would never make a mainstream release, like Pop's version of "One For My Baby (And One More For the Road)" where Iggy has to interrupt the song multiple times to ask the crowd to shut up for a minute for the quiet song. Rather than being an irritant, the song's inclusion, ultimately crooned to a smoldering climax, transports the listener right into the action. "Blah Blah Blah" and the seldom-performed "Kill City" are among the high-energy rockers, "China Girl," "Nightclubbing" and "Sister Midnight" pay tribute to Iggy's work with David Bowie with cuts from later works like Skull Ring and 2009's Preliminaires bringing the collection current. Listening to Roadkill Rising is like pulling an all-nighter with the Godfather of Punk, and as far as that unpredictability factor goes, how about wrapping things up with a cover of the chestnut "Willow Weep for Me"? Brilliant.
