The Chemical Brothers - Hanna: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

by Dan MacIntosh

The Chemical Brothers might have been too good a choice to soundtrack the film Hanna. As strange as such a statement may sound, it may actually be true. The Chemical Brothers are, at the end of the day, a song band. Unlike Daft Punk, which were able to create acceptable soundscapes for Tron, The Chemical Brothers to their great credit simply do not create mere background music.

This action movie soundtrack is filled with many wonderful aural surprises. The best one-two punch on the disc is titled "The Devil Is in the Details," first, then "The Devil Is in the Beats," the second time around, later in the track list. In its first incarnation, this whistle-y tune -- for lack of a better term -- comes off like The Seven DwarvesmeetsPeter, Bjorn & John. However, it isn't at all hokey, surprisingly. The second crack the act takes at the song is just as its title would lead you to believe is far more dance-y. Think of this latter track as The Seven Dwarves at Studio 54 and really getting down.

The Chemical Brothers also get a little Middle Eastern in a few places on this disc, and quite effectively so, too. Both "Quayside Synthesis" and "Escape 700" are propulsive sand dune romps that really get the heart rate up. In sharp contrast, "The Sandman" is chime-y and spooky, and seems better fit for a scary movie.

The mistake Daft Punk made with their Tron soundtrack was that they tried to play by the orchestral rules of the movie soundtrack game, instead of sticking to what they know best propulsive electronic music. The Chemical Brothers have wisely put together an electronic soundtrack very electrified, indeed -- to the film Hanna. Even so, these guys didn't entirely play it safe. Instead, they expanded the electronic music palate to include styles and sounds not often associated with the genre or the act themselves. This is an excellent collection of sounds/songs that will give you plenty of listening pleasure, whether you've seen the film or not. In this case, The Chemical Brothers got the chemistry just right.
