The Richard Thompson Band - Live at Celtic Connections

When Thompson first steps onstage at the beginning of this show he stares silently and deer-in-the-headlights like at the crowd, drawing an uneasy laugh from the audience who don't know what he's up to. The house lights are still up and it turns out Thompson is noting familiar faces in the crowd, even saying to one, "How's your leg?" Thompson and his audience remain similarly comfortable with each other throughout the 20-song set, comprised about equally of recent material like "The Money Shuffle" and "Among the Gorse, Among the Grey" and deep catalog cuts like "Wall of Death" and "Tear Stained Letter." As always, Thompson is in consummate form on guitar and with his vocals and fans should particularly like the unlikely-to-be-repeated set list here.
