Aurganic - Deviations

.
It's tough to put a finger on exactly what Aurganic sounds like. There are moments when the group is like a contemporary dance outfit; then there are sections, such as with "Choices," which features Joel Goguen, where the act brings to mind quieter 90s alternative rock, like Toad The Wet Sprocket.

Aurganic is, in realty, a talented duo that features two multi-instrumentalists. Leo Pisaq contributes synths, keyboards, programming, guitars and engineering, while Michael Kossiv sings, and plays guitar, bass, keyboard, as well as programs.

While the music on the full-length album Deviations is layered and fairly complex, with many instrumental passages constantly crossing paths, the singing is relatively straight forward. One of this album's best vocal moments happens on the song "Easy," which features Jessica Stuart, who gives it a relatively low key and subversive sound.

The lyrics for these songs are also mostly blunt and to the point. They tend to involve general human behaviors and situations, beginning with the track "Choices," and on to the closer and title track "Deviations," which is a somber, piano-based ballad.

At times, it's tough to become fully engaged with Pisaq and Kossiv's music. As inventive as Deviations can be, one doesn't walk away with a clear cut overall message from Aurganic. What it is they're trying to tell us through these sonic variations is a discernable message that is murky, at best. Even so, this act has created an aurally stimulating journey, if nothing else, and many times such a result is more than enough to ask for.
