Sir Cadian Rhythm

.
Sir Cadian Rhythm is a fantastic name for a band. It bespeaks Duke Ellington-meets-the human body clock. Sadly, though, this self-titled EP doesn't quite live up to such an ambitious moniker.

With that said, though, there is some fine music on this release. "Holly's On Fire" sounds a little like Oingo Boingo playing ska music at a big band festival. It's performed with frenetic energy and jazz ensemble skill.

It may be that vocalist Sir Jack Weppler (all five members' names are preceded with 'Sir,' by the way) is the act's Achilles heal. His vocal tone is similar to Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. But where Vedder's expressiveness just gets better and better, the more he pushes his instrument, Weppler's voice comes off sounding strained and somewhat unpleasant when pressed.

This vocal shortcoming is somewhat a shame because these musicians, particularly guitarist Sir Alex Laudani and keyboardist Matthew Carlin, are quite creative throughout. The lasting impression Sir Cadian Rhythm gives is that of a progressive rock band trying to sound like a straight rock group, but falling just a tad short of the mark.
