Metaspion - Folktronika Schmolkfonika

.
Metaspion is the brainchild of Morten Ricter, and "Folktronika Schmolkfonika" is a melting pot of all kinds of different musical styles. And no song title is more descriptive of Ricter's large umbrella approach than "Old Rules Don't Apply." Morton has collected a wide variety of different instruments, including a fiddle and a hurdy-gurdy. However, as in the case of this 'rules be damned track' track, he mixes in the old with the new. It sounds like folk musicians that have taken over a disco, as the bass grooves nicely underneath folky, psychedelic sounds.

Many times, Scandinavian folk music is the 'old school style' mixed with the strange bedfellow of EDM. One titled "Tveitaaen" even works in spoken word sections. These spoken parts consist of phrases ranging from pop psychology, to robotic encouragements to dance.

Ricter's unusual musical mixture may not appeal to everybody. This is not lowest common denominator pop music, by any stretch. Instead, it's adventurous music for the adventurous at heart. Play it when you're in a weird mood but still want to dance.
