Those bastards at Mercury records should
be shot for holding this album back from the public for the past three
years. Luckily for us Sub Pop got a hold of it and it now sees the light
of day after languishing in the vaults since 1998.
If you’re familiar with Red House Painters
you won’t be disappointed with this release, in fact it outshines “Songs
For A Blue Guitar” and reaches the exalted status of “Ocean Beach” with
new gems like “byrd joel”, the rockin “between days” and the beauty of
“cruiser”, “river” and “michigan”.
For those not familiar with Red House Painters
their sound isn’t for everyone, especially if you like smashing your head
against the wall to music but for those who like well-crafted music with
introspective and thoughtful lyrics you are in for a real treat as Old
Ramon delivers the goods for Mark Kozelek and company once again.
Think of Mark as the closest thing you’ll find to a modern Bob Dylan and
you’ll begin to get the bigger picture here.
