My first exposure to Train was hearing them do some incredible acoustic Led Zeppelin covers on a morning radio talk show, I was so impressed I picked up their debut album. While I wasn't overwhelmed with their first effort, the music was pretty good filled with lots of hooks and good solid yet not overly complicated composition. Ironically, it was one of the weakest tracks from that album, "Meet Virginia", that managed to put a dent in the charts.
With Drops of Jupiter, Train retains the
formula that made their first album a success: A hook happy middle of the
rock band like Matchbox Twenty without the annoying nasel vocals of Rob
Thomas or The Dave Matthews Band. The bottom line, the band doesn't make
a grand departure from the sound of their debut, so if you liked their
first album be sure to pick this one up. On the other hand, there isn't
anything new here to win over additional fans.
