Not a bad effort from ill nino, they still come off as a poorman's Soulfly which isn't surprising when you consider they are on Roadrunner a label that has a tendency to regurgitate their top bands with second and third rate clones. Also of note is the fact that is was Dave Chavarri brief stint with Soulfly that inspired him to form this group.
I was prepared to absolutely hate this CD but found myself unconsciously getting into it. It's true it takes the six members in this band to create a noise that other groups can create with three members. This is brutal in your face nu-metal, which is really hard-core with a new spin.
Ill nino isn't very diverse when it comes to songwriting and the songs all pretty much fall into the same category with a similar sound but what the hell, they know what they like and stick with it. Flaw is far better in the songwriting and diversity department but songs like "Unreal" and "What Comes Around" really show ill nino's nu metal character, going from melodic verses to bone-crushing hard-core choruses. Max Cavalera doesn't quite have to worry yet about being dethroned but given a few more years, if ill nino keeps at it and nu-metal doesn't die out Max might have to watch his ass!
