We usually don’t post reviews over a month
before an album is set for release but after listening to the advance of
The Vines “Highly Evolved” I had to make an exception. I really can’t help
myself, it’s sort of like being a kid who discovered something really,
really cool and you just have to tell everyone who will listen about it.
This CD is like that; it fires up my inner evangelist and makes me want
to preach the good news of The Vines from street corners. Yes, I am being
quite serious!
Another good reason to post this review
so early is the fact that the buzz about this group is about to hit critical
mass and dare I say the hype that is expected to blowup around them may
turn some people off before they even give the CD an honest listen. That
would be a big mistake and the people who jump to that premature conclusion
would only be cheating themselves.
I anticipate that in the coming weeks and
months we will hear a lot about The Vines. Especially the inevitable linking
of them to groups like The Strokes and The White Stripes. Let’s head those
off first. It is true that when The Strokes hit the national scene last
year they became an immediate critical darling because their retro style
and sound was a nice reprieve from the stale varieties of rock ruling the
airwaves. Because The Vines also employ a retro atmosphere to their sound,
they are likely to get lumped in with The Strokes but I would caution the
reader against making that connection. For one, the depth of the music
and songwriting on The Vines “Highly Evolved” album far surpasses even
the best moments of the Strokes album. Two, the music the Strokes produce
is far more limited in scope than The Vines. “It is like listening to all
your favourite bands at once,” wrote Betty Clarke of the British supersite
Guardian Unlimited. Betty hit on one of the key appeals of The Vines with
that statement. As you progress through the sonic voyage of soaking in
the album, you catch glimpses of other musical greats ranging from The
Beatles to Pink Floyd to Nirvana to The Stooges to early Soul Asylum and
many others. The Vines draw from many musical wells to write their own
music and the result is a vast canvas in which they make their art.
Determining that this was one of the best,
if not the best new CD I’ve heard yet this year was a no brainer. From
the first angst filled chords of the lead off track and first single, “Highly
Evolved”, The Vines captured my full attention. The song has The Stooges
meet Nirvana feel to it propelled with an abundance of melodic hooks and
overdriven guitars. Clockin in at one minute and 34 seconds the song is
over almost as soon as it begins, which makes it a really compelling option
to hit the rewind key on the CD player to hear it one more time. But then
the second song “Autumn Shade” starts and you decide to wait on replaying
the first song. “Autumn Shade” shows a mellower side of the Vines and is
the first introduction of the Beatles meets modern alternative rock you
will hear on the album. The song actually sounds a lot like something one
of my favorite unsigned bands Twelvehourmary might play. But again the
experience is short lived as the song segways into the much heavier “Outtathaway”
after only a couple of minutes. Here the Vines pay homage to Iggy Pop once
more but unlike a band like the White Stripes, The Vines blend the Stooges
influence with others like Nirvana that really helps it become far more
than a copy of the Stooges.
“Sunshinin’” comes across like an acid
rock band that was suddenly transplanted into 1992 Seattle and transfixed
by the grunge sound, incorporated it into their style while maintaining
their 60’s rock characteristics. The next song “Homesick” a ballad
that sounds like it would feel comfortable on side two of The Beatles “Abbey
Road” is a real highpoint of the album. The Vines mix of melody, exceptionally
delivered instrumentation and harmonies on this song are just part of what
makes this band so exciting to listen to and dare I say it, really helps
them stand head and shoulders above just about any band on the rock scene
at the moment.
“Get Free”, a full speed rocker takes elements
of early punk, grunge and 70’s era glam of the New York Dolls and gives
it a modern spin. It really comes on like something that Local H or early
Soul Asylum would write.
“Country Yard,” another slower song has
a psychedelic Beatles meets Radiohead groove to it that should appeal to
listeners both young and old. With “Factory” we see another side of the
group’s Beatles influence, a song that starts out as a look back at John
Lennon’s “Mr. Kite” from “Sgt Peppers”, the Lennon influence in the vocals
is uncanny. If it wasn’t for the heavier guitar driven interludes some
people might actually mistake this song for a long lost track from the
“Sgt. Peppers” sessions. The working class sentiments of the lyrics also
tie the song in with Lennon in spirit.
“In The Jungle” spans the decades as well
with heavy late 60’s undercurrent and modern alternative rock face that
makes it similar to the music of bands like The Posies but with a bit more
balls.
“Mary Jane” has a real trippy feel to it,
the vocals, bass and guitar sound unmistakably like “Dark Side of Moon”
era Pink Floyd, which is a really stunning achievement as not many bands
can pull off Pink Floyd’s style without sounding contrived. Every time
this song comes up, I have to hit repeat a couple of times, it’s that good!
“Ain’t No Room” is the most modern sounding
song on the album, the heavy guitars and vocals sound a bit like Nirvana
but it also mixes The Vines 60’s influences, so it stays in character with
their other songs. “1969” gets to the heart of the matter, a song where
the Vines unabashingly admit their deep love for the music of the late
60’s with lyrics like, “It’s 1969 in my head / I just want to have no place
to go / Living through the sound of the dead”. The sound is a clever mix
of the Beatles and Pink Floyd with a bridge that falls into Iggy Pop territory.
This is a really a love song written to an era of music that the band obviously
loves.
Unlike other bands that borrow from The
Beatles like Oasis, The Vines didn’t lift the sound from the Fab Four intact;
they take the best elements of many artists and recraft them into their
own sound. It may be 2002 but The Vines make you wish it were 1969 again.
For those of us who were too young to live through the real era of the
late 60’s, this is the next best thing. It’s time that music from a major
label stretches the boundaries of what is expected and voyages beyond the
pop-rock constraints of modern radio friendly music. The Vines are quite
simply one of the best new bands to hit the music scene in years. These
four guys from Australia have the makings of superstars and as James Dean
Bradfield of the Manic Street Preachers recently said, The Vines are “'absolutely
fucking amazing.” Bloody well right!

and to those of you who say the band would be the best with out craig nicholls you are so wrong without craig they wouldnt have any songs because he writes all of them (except 1969 which was written by craig and patrick)

Craigs Dad is not a sony music exec, hes an accountant! Craigs and artist, not a "rock star" he says that all the time in interviews, hes a little strange yes... but thats whats cool about him, hes not so normal. Go the Vines and go rock 'n roll on general!

They are pretty boys who teeny girls would like to eh,eh but can't so they buy their CD..they are an insult to all those amazing and inspiring people making music..their fraudulence will be exposed eventually.

I actually like the strokes. I don't see what people have against them. they actually know how to play guitar, and they're very talented music-wise. I prefer the strokes to the vines. but I like the vines a lot. they're all cool. people are too critical for their own good.

Dr. there have been sociology studies on just that and there is some truth to it but it goes a bit deeper. It's the old rebellion gets watered down and turned into a shiny product thing and then a new cycle of rebellion comes along to start it all over again. Music trends usually last between 4 and 5 years according to most musicologist and that plays right into that. Ok and SMIC, you are right. I think The Vines are far and way better than the other bands that have emerged from this retro rock thing. They have far more substance to their music, i think if any of the bands in this wave are to last very long they are the ones to do it. Then again, crap usually appeals to the widest audience so we might be stuck with the Strokes!

I have been very critical of the "Garage Punk" thing from the first and find most of the bands in that clique to be quite boring The Vine however are something diffrent they standout among this generally lackluster crowd as a band that truly rocks, Stroke This Julian Casalancas you have been trumped

i wanna get free. f*ck the strokes, hives, etc. these bands shouldn't be grouped together(ya man, but they all have the word "the" in front of them!). the vines have a future, the others are f*cking garbage.

Dr. Scrub, your theory has a couple holes: The late 50's and 60's kicked ass musicwise. Actually, the early 70s was a bad period for music, with Hendrix, Morrison, and Joplin dying; the Beatles, Cream, and more breaking up... The cycles of crap music/good music exist but I don't think there's any way to predict when they'll be.

i have a theory about rock. in every decade, the first years are awesome and extraordinary for rock music. but then somewhere in the middle, rock starts getting crappy, and finally in the end of the decade, it dies, leaving the pop manufactered crap to take over. and the whole cycle begins with pop fading out. it all began in the early 70s with bands like the rolling stones, the beatles, led zeppling rocking the scene, then the disco era trend massacred its greatness, but alas it ended and underground punk music became mainstream with bands like the clash, the ramones, sex pistols to come and save rock in the early 80s, then again pop crap like madonna, michael jackson, prince totally took the scene, and there was only left hair bands and power ballads. But suddenly with the help of metallica and guns and roses, other bands started experimenting with every element, and in the early 90s, grunge was born with the rise and tragic fall of nirvana. then in the mid 90s the new wave trend began to make rock a mindless genre, when it just faded out and the worst happened, with the rise of the bsb, nsync, five, britney spears which were at some time nonstopable, and of course no help from the new metal, rap metal crap from limp bizkit, linking park, kid rock made it just a uncurable cancer that was just killing the decency of rock. but what i realized when i see mtv, much, etc is that rock is coming back again, and pop bands such as nsync, bsb and weslife are dissapearing with the shocking low sales from britney's new album. of course we still have to deal with new metal and neopunk, but retro bands such as the vines, the hives, the strokes are bringing back the real meaning of good old rock and roll. but still yet to come another generation teenyboppers mindless band in the years 2007-2012

I was looking through the CD rack at the store, and I had to choose between Nirvana's Nevermind, which I used to own but my cousin stole from me, The White Stripes album, two Strokes albums, The Vines CD, and the new Red Hot Chilli Peppers CD. To make a long story short, my good friend Cody bought the excellent Red Hot Chilli Peppers CD, and I bought the Vines CD. And we're both extremely happy with our choices. Both exceeded our expectations (especially the Vines), and are a couple of the best albums we've heard all year. For sure, 4 1/2 stars, at least.

If you dig the whole Vines album you'd like the Beatles. Try hearing "Tomorrow Never Knows"--Now THAT'S far from what most people are listening to. Maybe the Vines will be your stepping-stone to musical salvation from your self-proclaimed "teeny bopper" tastes...

I am only 13 so if u think i am too young to have an intelligent opinion i dont care because i probably dont have as much music knowledge as every else but i think the cd is amazing. i am into bands such as deadsy, orgy, korn, and such but this was really different from what is out right now. i dont like the fact that they get mixed up in all of that strokes stuff because the strokes are one of the worst bands i have ever heard. i heard get free and i thought it was so far from everything i listen to and what everyone else listens to that it was quite amazing. i wasnt really alive when the beatles and all of those 60's bands were out but i dont really like their music ne way. i think that the vines are gonna make it really big whether thats a good thing or bad. bad in my opinion bcuz i hate when bands get big then get too arrogant. well i have said enough if ne one actually decided to read what a little teeny bopper 13 year old girl had to say......

Absolutely brilliant! We need more bands like the Vines! Look at the state of the music industry! This is the cloud with a sliver lining.

I picked it up due to all the kind words and it's dirt cheap price tag, and I am damn impressed.I was a little worried at first that the vocals would be too "screamy" after seeing the "Get Free" video(don't get me wrong, I love screaming as much as the next guy, but it has a time and a place.). My worries wern't justified, thankfully, as all the vocals on the album work perfectly. Not the best album I've ever heard by a longshot, but damn good nevertheless.

I just recently bought this too, thanks to this review and the couple tracks I'd downloaded... Finally, after months and months anitMUSIC turned me onto some new music. Anyway, it's a very good album, you wonder what this band is going to sound like two or three records down the road. Of course they don't equal the Beatles or Nirvana right now, but their debut equals both of those bands', I think... Give em time, who knows. I do beleive this beats Yankee Hotel Foxtrot though... YHF is good but a little overrated.

This is THE best music to come out of Australia.....EVER!!!!....None of all this weak, pathetically hollow rubbish that is raved about by radio huggers! This is something different from the guidelines of music, something inspirational, something magic even. when I BOUGHT this CD (not pirated, but bought) i new as soon as I listened to it that The fans of The Vines are on to something that will hopefully spark a musical revolution, do what all those bands of pre-packaged rebellion have been paid to talk about. The best song on this CD is "Country Yard" closely followed by "Get Free", "In The Jungle" and "Factory". This is the second CD that I have listened to where I haven't felt the need to skip forward or back past any songs I don't really like. The first was "Black Sails In The Sunset" by AFI.
"The Vines, Highly Evolved" The best CD I have EVER listened to!

THE ALMIGHTY!: I have to admit that I was skeptical about
The Vines at first, seeing as they were being referred to as a cross between
Nirvana and The Beatles. I knew automatically that the hype was bigger
than the greatness of the band, because that kind of combination of great
bands would create such amazing music that the world would explode. And,
on top of that, I think that Get Free is not a very good song (in fact
probably worst on the CD) which didn't help my opinion at this point. However,
I actually listened to the album and have concluded that a) yes, this is
a truely great band, with truely great music; b) No, this band is not the
next rock & roll messiah as major sources have indicated, nor does
even begin to breach the border of the genius of Nirvana and The Beatles.
Nowhere even remotely close to that kind of godly songwriting. and c) This
IS one of the best albums of the year (Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot has
taken that cake for best so far), and YES I will probably buy it (mostly
because I found it for dirt cheap). Personally, I would rate this album
at a 4.2. It's exceedingly good, but not THAT good.

I hope not. I hope they have time to grow and mature in the underground,
like the Pixies. Besides, if they become the next big thing the only thing
that's gonna come from that is a bunch of Knock-offs and Nickel back trying
to sound like Iggy and saying there just trying to be themselves.

Mr Poppolopogus: 'Tis all about the Vines! Seriously though,
I saw them on June 26th at Liverpool University and it was the single most
amazing thing I have yet witnessed! Craig is an absolute lunatic - he looks
really out of it on stage but still sings and plays perfectly - you can't
take your eyes off him - he finished the set with a solo accoustic number
before calling the rest of the band on again for a hardcore as-of-yet unreleased
song which he finished by smashing his fender into the floor yet somehow
making it look cool and not an attempt to imitate any of the older bands
who made such stunts famous ( honest! ) The Vines are amazing, I seriously
lie in my bed listening to 'Mary Jane' at night and everything in the world
seems cool. I know that I am going on a lot here but I hope they don't
become super-hyped to the extent that it puts people off of their music
as that would be a real shame! It's a strange situation these days - I
want these bands to get the recognition they deserve - rather them than
'the backstreet boys', 'westlife' 's-club 7' or some other talentless manufactured
group but it seems that any hype just gets them slagged off by supposed
'music lovers' that makes me sad, sad and angry - raaaaargh!

it has a big feature on a lot of new garage bands (the name does suck,
but hey, no one liked punk or emo either).

Guru of Everlasting Wisdom: The Strokes and White Stripes aren't quiiite

at some point since the 1950s?? But none of these bands have yet to go
platinum; I've been thinking that this scene could be the springboard for
the fabulous Next Big Thing, if so, screw electronica, it's gonna be rock

they don't suck. Just d/l the mp3 for In the Jungle and you can tell that
