The problem with most CD reviews is you only
get the opinion of the one critic doing the review. So we thought it might
be fun to try something new here by giving the exact same CD to two different
critics (or more) and see what they each come up with and just how much
difference a single critic's opinion can make.
Note: due to the nature of this series, the reviews
may tend to be more in the first person than you are used to with music
criticism.
[ed note- This review marks the debut of Brad Podray here at antiMUSIC
and the return of Justin McConkey. We are really pleased to have both here
at anti. ]
This series was devised precisely for releases
like this one. With a band like Velvet Revolver you are likely to hear
various opinions. So it's a natural for us to feature this one as a tag
team review project. We start out with three reviews for the album, but
we may add a few more if other antiMUSIC writers wish to contribute in
the coming weeks.

Justin McConkey starts us off - he gave

I’ve been hearing quite a bit of hype surrounding
Velvet Revolver, most of it involving the impact they’re going to have
on the unassuming music wasteland that lies before them. I’d like to first
point out that it is true, the current musical landscape is a wasteland
and it’s also true that Velvet Revolver are a monster of a band complete
with raging guitars, hum-able melodies, scorching leads, a pounding rhythm
section that has just enough swagger to keep your head moving, and vocals
that beg to be sung out of tune at the top of your lungs in your car with
the windows rolled down.
Basically they have musical talent and
with the likes of Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), Slash, Duff McKagen
(both of Guns N’ Roses), Dave Kushner and Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses/The
Cult) I think that should kind of go without saying. But unfortunately
talent rarely ever equates impact. So let’s try to forget whatever hype
we’ve heard for the remainder of this review and talk about the music because
at the end of the day, if this is to be a truly important record is based
solely on whether or not it’s still in your CD player. And this one will
be.
First off this is a rock disc, so if you
don’t like rock then I will save you the trouble of reading on and tell
you right now that you will not dig Velvet Revolver. It’s got fairly conventional
rock riffs that will be familiar to anyone who’s a fan of either STP or
GnR. It’s got blistering solos with plenty of divine fretwork from the
magical fingers of Slash.
It’s got an overload of rock numbers as
compared to the slower, more introspective numbers. But most importantly,
it’s got flaws. Good, genuine, honest flaws. It sounds like a band finding
it’s feet, working hard at their craft; a band destined for an even better
release the next time out. I remember Appetite for Destruction. I remember
thinking god it’s got about 8 great songs, but a couple real clunkers,
but I can’t wait for the next release cause at least it’s got some heart,
at least it feels real. Unfortunately GnR never really blessed us with
anything like that again, but I think VR will. They seem like a band that’s
hungry for the road, a band ready to make fans the old fashioned way...
by beating them over the head until they beg for mercy. So buy this disc
and enjoy it for the moments where everyone in the band clicks and it feels
like the music is actually transcending time as you listen, but love it
for its imperfections because it means they’ve got room to grow and we've
got something to look forward to. Lets just hope they stay hungry enough
to keep striving to achieve that elusive perfect record.

Let me first say
that I am reviewing this album straight through, writing this review exactly
as I'm listening to each individual track. In doing this, the nature
of the review may go from negative to extremely positive very quickly if
I suddenly hear something that really kicks ass. So far, such a change
does not seem like it's coming anytime soon. Part of the great thing
about starting a new band and releasing fresh new songs is the chance to
really release something new right? Well, it appears I'm hearing
anything but new music. So far, "Sucker Train Blues" seems like the
rock song I've heard seventeen times before on a high-budget car commercial
or trailer for the newest pop-teen movie. Wait. A guitar solo?
I was beginning to think that new bands had forgotten this relic of music's
past.
Despite my dislike
of the music in general and my view of it as Scott Weiland cookie-cutter
work, I have to enjoy the fact that a popular band actually had the balls
to bring this back. One point goes to Velvet Revolver for the guitar
solo, but that point is quickly taken away when I realize it doesn't really
change my opinion of the album. The same breakdowns, song structure,
catchy chorus lines that everyone can remember, and angst-driven lyrics
that are found here are also found everywhere. Perhaps I just got
used to the Scott Weiland formula of droning verse lyrics contrasted with
higher octave yelling during the choruses. Lets not forget the obligatory
slow song that has to go on every hard rock album. In this case,
the slow, heartfelt "Loving the Alien" has about as much innovation as,
well, every other song on the album. With the exception of the guitar
solos, this album seems musically written just so 16 year olds with their
guitars could go on their local guitar tabs website and play their favorite
Velvet Revolver song perfectly.
Let me take this
moment to say once more, THANK YOU VELVET REVOLVER FOR THE SOLOS!
Slash does an absolutely bang-up job showing off the stuff that's made
him a legend. Now I believe velvet revolver would be absolutely amazing
if the following things were changed: Vocals, Song structure, added in
some cow moos every 30 seconds(c'mon. Everyone loves cows and
NOBODY's done that!), That's it.
Sure to please: Probably
everyone who listens to their local hard rock station and really enjoys
it.
Sure to disappoint:
Me.
Best track: I can't
really pick. They're all pretty much the same thing...with the exception
of some badass guitar work.
Review Rating(of
5): 2.5 ...all because of the guitar solos.
antiGUY's Review - He gave it a Rating

Since I am sure that
my fellow anti-scribs will be checking in with their reviews, I will keep
this short and sweet. A lot of people are looking to Velvet Revolver to
be different things: The second coming of Guns N’ Roses – the messiahs
of hard rock – the biggest supergroup to hit the planet since (fill in
the blanks). So expectations are gonna be real high for this one.
I had to force myself to throw those expectations out of the window when
I gave this disc a few spins. I’m glad I did because nothing ever lives
up to your expectations. With that being said, this is a good solid hard
rock record. You are not going to get GNR II, no matter where you look.
For one, two key players are not involved, Axl and Izzy (well, Izzy was
in a way but it was his songs that helped make AFD such a breakthrough
album), plus back in 1987 you had a group of young guys hungry for stardom
and angry at the world. It’s 2004 and while they still have their trials
and tribulations, the ex Gunners don’t need to a hit record to succeed.
No, instead you have an album from a group of musicians that seem to be
doing it not to prove anything to anyone but for love of playing the music.
I admit when I heard “Slither” my first reaction was “so what?”.
It didn’t blow me away, but after hearing the full CD, it really grew on
my instantly. The songs do not standout the way that most of the tracks
on AFD did BUT the album stands out as a whole. Like I said earlier, it’s
a good solid rocker. Those expecting GNR II might be disappointed, Scott
Weiland is many things, but vocally he is cut from a very different cloth
than Axl. He brings to the table a much different dynamic and a pop sensibility
that Axl never had. While with Axl you got the primal screams and Katherine
Hepburn like slower moments, with Scott you also get power but it is engulfed
by his textured harmonies. Not a bad thing by a long shot and that’s one
thing that helps keep Velvet Revolver from being a simple spin-off or a
boring supergroup but instead gives them their own identity. If you
can suspend your expectations and give this disc an honest listen, you
will find a lot of love. It may not be AFD but it is not 1987 and this
is far better than most rock records we’ve had in a while.
Your
Turn, We now know what our reviewers thing but what do you think?

the album isn't the greatest album ever made. it's also not the most innovative album either. it is a very good rock n' roll labum though. it's better than any of the solo projects the members have put-out so stop whining. by the way, for all the GnR (super)fans, a couple of these songs were worked on with Izzy, so Axl was the only person missing (not that he can make anything worth listening too). a good cd of pure rock n' roll power.

This is the greatest rock album to be released in years. This is what rock and roll is all about. This is the greatest thing to happen for all of us who are true G n R fans. Scott Weiland is the greatest frontman EVER! I am also a huge fan of STP and have always loved Scotts style.

Velvet Revolver is extremly amazing. I believe that this is the type of bands that should be around. They make it rock-n-roll and not many people can say that a band can be real rock. Well besides the old stuff. Velvet Revovler is going to be a power band and no ones is going to stand in thier way.
Posted by Cat:
Velvet Revolver is not a revolutionary band. It's not new or fresh but it is what the industry needs right now, it's a throwback to rock n' roll. It's something that brought back something that was being pushed to one side. I love the album.
Posted by Smotz:
Velvet Revoler is pretty damned decent for a mainstreem band nowadays. I love STP but, aren't really a fan of GNR. Scott Weiland is one of the vastest voices out there. Slither and Fall To Peices are both good songs. I notice when new bands are formed with new already famous members you think like in this case, 'it's gonna sound like Scott Weiland with GNR.' And when it comes out it doesn't. Well, in this case it does and it's not that bad.

It's the best thing the gyus could have come up with. I listened to the whle CD at work and was blown away in the sense that I just liked EVERY SINGLE SONG. there's no let down through Contraband and I think VR did a grat work in archieving a solid fundamental Hard Rock LP.
There's nothing new, who cares? There hasn't been in ages. But they are good songs. Maybe a bit on the standard riffs but it doesn't rely on them.
I hate people who just can't accept the fact that soem "supergroup" did made some good songs. far away from perfect but just good.
Those are the same kind of ppl who like some strange bands that they've heard somewhere and nobody else knows, regardless if they kick or blow ass...

Vanveek,
I agree I am also a huge fan of both STP & GNR and was disappointed about the STP breakup-but I'm not gonna think of it as starting at zero-I'm thinking he's starting over. I like VR and hope they stick around for a while. And I'm not comparing their voices - I'm just saying Axl loses his voice when he sings live-it gets bad. In studio he sounds great and even at the beginning of the show's I've seen him at has sounded good but then it goes downhill. I think they are both great singers and great artists but Axl went off the deep end back in the day and hasn't come back to reality. It doesn't seem like he ever will and that's a shame.

STP & GnR
you know I never thought yoiu could put these two together . I love both bands and grew up lisetening to them. when I hear either of there songs I know the words and can hum the breaks. But I'm kinda dissapointed that scott is starting back at zero again. STP was starting to evolve and I liked where they were going. maybe scott thought that STP couldn't grow anymore. I really hope that VR will slightly change there format every album they make so that before too long they will have there own sound. Don't get me worng I bought the CD and I love the GnR / STP mixed sound that it has but the only thing that makes bands memorible is if they have a distinct sound that can make you feel empty after the song is finished and a sound that is almost impossible to reproduce. DO NOT compare singer against one anouther they soung the way they want to sound they make music and write songs that make them feel good and if some people like it great but the second you start comparing a musicain to some one else you missed the whole point of why this person wrote the song the way they did. As far as critics go they can barely set the time on there car radio and if you asked them to play a song it would sound like some sort of camp fire sing-along.
Posted by Animal:
Piggy-if you don't like hard rock why give your opinion at all. You probably have never seen original GNR-I have. I have also seen VR and it's very comparable with the exception of Axl's terrible voice almost ruining the shows. I've seen GNR many times-his voice would always start cracking before the end of the show. Axl's Project-not that it will EVER get off the ground cause he's mental-will not blow the socks off this thing. Oh and guess what "those old fukkers can still jam!" Audioslave, VR, Pantera, Slayer(Who BTW are just as old as VR members-duh), Megadeth, Ozzy, Sabbath-seen all the "old Fuks" and they still rock. That's the problem with some of you jackass kids today-NO respect for older artists. You all cry that everything sucks. Why don't you ask the three obscure bands your obsessed with with who their influences are-I'll guarantee you it's some band of old fuks who think they can still rock.
Posted by miss piggy:
It's not a bad CD, nor is it great. granted i've only listened to it once a week ago, but blown away i was not after hearing any track. these new rock superstar hybrid bands (VR, Audioslave) i suppose give people who love hard rock (not me) and fans of there old groups some hope that these old fukkers can still jam. for me Audioslave brought something fresh, innovative, and merged the best qualities of two defunct super bands. VR didn't in my opinion. I havent like anything weiland has done in years. anyway, axls new project will blow the socks off this thing, i heard they're pushing a release date for 2012. just around the corner. no slayer till 05', but dont worry hobo just play this cd really fast and the leads will sound like Kerry and Jeff.

Love the CD. Anyone who digs it has to see them live-they will blow you away. I've seen STP 5 times and original GNR 4X and VR put on a better live show than the original 2 bands in my opinion. They were tighter. When I first saw them in May in Philly they were so good I bought tix for the Atlantic City show that was this past Sat-both shows were incredible. They mix up the VR songs with some GNR songs and some STP songs-all of it is amazing. Scott nails the GNR better live than I've ever seen Axl sing. If you get a chance check them out-it's more than worth it.

Come on, this ain't 'bout comparing STP to P. JAM. This cd comes over 10 years after those bands' classics and of course won't come even close to those peaks. Even the most talented ones run out of ideas. A decend 3 star album, EASILY THE 3 BEST TRACKS BEING Fall to Pieces, Slither and You Got No Right. Pearl Jam and STP are both unbeliveable bands, PEARL JAM made 3 masterpieces (TEN, VS, VITALOGY) whereas STP made two (PURPLE, TINY MUSIC). Guns N Roses comes nowhere near, either on the quality of their best work or consistency. Only Layne Staley and M J Keenan of TOOL compete with Vedder and Weiland when it comes to greatest vocalists of 90's, This is the truth.

Posted by Tom:
Anyone who says this CD is crap is a musical idiot. You may not be into straight ahead rock, which is fine. You may also argue that the production of the disc (especially the vocal mix) is also crap. The fact is however, Scott Weiland has the best voice in Rock n' Roll right now (besides Maynard) and Slash is a bad ass guitarist. Although I realize that this disc doesn't push any musical boundaries, this band is tight. Velvet Revolver is exactly what Rock needs right now; a no-frills, in your face, kick ass band that's not trying to suck up to the media or anyone just to sell records and get on TV. They don't give a fuk if you like them and that's the way it should be. Incubus would literally cry if their record didnt go gold....Good Charlotte wouldn't sell records if they didn't wear gay-ass pseudo freak makeup, and the "THE" bands wouldn't even be on the radio if Clear Channel wasn't trying so hard to bring back the "retro-garage band thing" Too many of today's artists are in the business to write "Hits" and become famous....what Velvet Revolver reminds us is that Rock n' Roll is about the music and nothing else. So the next time that you haters are checking out a "quality" Godsmack, Staind, or Nickleback show just remember that they are just copies of an imitation.
Note....Velvet Revolver songs sound twice as good live

Scott Weiland is more aggressive, ala "Core" on this album than he was on the more-recent STP albums. There are the obvious Slash guitar riffs. Guitar solos are second to none. While the vocals are unmistakably Scott Weiland, I don't think it overshadows (or harkens back to his traditional sound) the sound of THIS band, like Chris Cornell in Audioslave (a good album in its own right, but sounded to me like glorified Soundgarden). Overall, I agree wtih aG, but I'm disappointed that nobody mentioned "Set Me Free," IMO, the most kick ass track on the album!

Many arguments against "Contraband" are the comparisons to today's "wasteland" of current music and the idea that if music in general was better right now this album or band would not be such a success. Well, the music scene currently is horrible and I am glad that this flash from late 80's and early - mid 90's is here. Can you remember back in 93 - 96 when even the one hit wonder singles were better than the chart topping groups that claim superiority over the air waves today? I do and it is refreshing to re-live STP and GnR. This album will hopefully breakthrough to upcoming artist and show them that just because you are immensely different than anything else right now does not mean it is good.

Who cares? What has any one or all of these guys done in the last decade that has been worth while? Anybody care for the last couple of STP records, how about Slash's Snakepit(couldn't even sell CDs with Slash's name in the title) or .... what the hell has Duff and Matt even done since thier GNR days? Yet people want to proclaim them as this or that, or even that they "just want to rock", well if that is the case, why have they been completely invisible up until now?! I am sure it will sell a decent amount of CDs but only to the people who want them to be the next GNR or STP or....when was the last time a so called super group had any success beyond the nostalgia set? Which, since nostalgia is selling pretty well right now, is probably the only reason this will sell at all. Having said all of this, I have not heard, nor do I care to hear, the whole CD, but that god-awful "Slither" song is enough to keep me away. Count me out!
