For the record, i'm hardly a rap fan, and basically yr four-member guitar format does it for me, but i think its foolish to be so patronising about the limited creativity you feel is inherent in certain mediums. For many rap has been a powerful medium of grass-roots agitation/solidarity and is an experimentation with musical forms which unlike most has managed to become popular. I agree with the point made eearlier about rap being judged on Eminem , which would be like judging he merits of rock on tonic or someone equally redundant or cheaply provocative. A lack of creativity or "newness" is what lacking in popular rock and why people are turning to dance/hip hop/rap -- the only alternative in commercially viable music rock-wise is your Matchbox 20's. I understand that there are creative indie rock bands out there, but largely they are self-indulgent "we just wanna sit in our lounge room, don' look at us" muso wankers who are self-defeatist in their anti-commercial purism. Dance and rap are harnessing commercialiy and because of this and the fact that heye are different, record companies and people are taking notice. Rock needs someone and something new with personality to even start to competee again with wha you seem to think are these creatively starved mediums. But, for the record, EMINEM SHOULD BEE KILLED

look, for everyone out there who thinks rap takes no talent, try putting something together and rapping. Once you finish that, look it over and see if it sounds retarded. If its anything like most of the stuff people on this board make up, saying things like, "oh, look at me, I just made a rap! Its so easy!", then chances are you sound like a dumbass. But if you listen to hip hop groups like The Roots, or J5, their lyrics are solid and on point; they have good flow and make sense. Rap takes many skills, not the least of which is effective flow and word choices that don't make you sound stupid. And by the way, a lot of rock bands have non-sensical lyrics (uh, Bush). All music takes talent, but truth and emotion make music great. Most top bands in any genre put their hearts into their songs.
