Lately I have seen the words
sell out attributed to bands more and more frequently. Our good friend
Dr. Fever made that
point to me a couple weeks ago and it got me thinking. What makes a band
a sell out? Is there a difference between growing musically and selling
out? People do change over time. Were the Beatles sell outs? Please Please
me and Across the Universe don't even sound like they were recorded by
same band, so did they sell out? Hell no!
Yes there is a difference
between maturing musically and selling out. Bands have to evolve or they
become boring, they also have the natural tendency to try new things. However,
when a band changes with the sole aim of selling more cd's or concert tickets,
that my friend is a sell out. Now take a look at my list of the top
5 ways to tell if a band has sold out.

5. They start listening to the record company
execs ( or Carson Daly) when they talk about focus groups and demographics.

hopes of appealing to a wider audience (and Carson Daly).

they start to care what anyone thinks. you make music for yourself and
the art, to express your emotions and inspirations. to listen to other
peoples oppinions and play for money, not for love of the music is bullsh%t!!!

If you actually give a f#ck if i band
has 'sold out', then you're listening to music for an image too, it's just
a different one. Whether its a better image is a matter of opinion. And
don't kid yourself, the only difference between Celine Dion and your fav
band is your opinion.

I don't see why you hate Carson Daly so
much, but I sort of agree that people throw around the word "sellout" too
much, I still don't think that a band should be looked down on just because
they like making money doing something they love.

NEVER DIE! Bizkit's old stuff was good, Sig.Other was a bit down the drain
compared to 3 D.B.Y., but it was O.K., but Choc.Starf.+H.D.Flav.h2o just

okay okay so Carson Daly is associated
with everything that is phony about the music business. And yes i agree
he is a prick, but just cuz some asswipe band knows carson doesn't exactly
make them sell outs. The one thing i hate is when an underground band suddenly
makes it big with a song and everybody calls them sellouts. Why? Can you
honestly blame a band for making music that the a whole sh*t load of people
like? I think what makes a band a total sell out is when they go out of
their way to be in your face 24 hrs a day seven days a week, just cuz they
want to sell MILLIONS of records and get that HUGE pay check. When it becomes
all about the $ that's what makes a band has sold out. As for limp bizkit,
they're are everywhere and i'm sick of them. But just cuz i don't like

are those who change their style to sell records.I know that this is how
most musicians make money but if your with a certain style stick with it!
Like is Slipknot turned into a country band that would be selling out.No
bands need to change their style because they will always have fans in
the category of music they play.If you change your style to get on the

I think the music industry is seriously
f-cked up.Everybody runs around saying this band is a sellout and poser,
and its mostly not true.I do have to admit Limp Bizkit sold out. That thing
on stage at the VMA's with Aquilera was totally wrong, and Fred's sh-t
on dissin all these cool bands is just f-ckin gay. I think a sell-out band
is anybody who does stuff for people who live MTV 24-7. Most music these
days isnt even music.You are officially a music group when you MAKE YOUR
OWN MUSIC.Limp Bizkit may suck and fred may have sold out but their atleast
a real band and make their own music.People like EMINEM, BackStreet Boys,
N*Sync, Britney Spears, and others arnt really music they just add their
f-cked up voices to already recorded stuff and they make millions for it!
Most garage bands who cant play sh-t and have crappy lead singers are more
of a music group than this Pop and Rap bullsh-t.I do like some big bands
though.The one's who pull off being number one by themselves and without
MTV or the Radio.Nine Inch Nails is an example.How many times do you hear
them on the radio? Sure some of their new videos were on MTV but where
else are they supposed to put the music videos? VH1? Nobody watches that
except old people.Some other examples of bands that do it on their own
are Slipknot, Mudvayne, Taproot, Powerman5000, Sevendust, Coal Chamber.Need

I have never been a fan of the "Limp Bizkit/Korn"
genre of music...but I definately think performing with Christina Aguilara

I don't think Metallica has sold out.
The whole Napster thing is a bitch and a half, and while I love then I
don't particularly agree with them, but they're only trying to protect
what they've worked so hard for. Anyone remember when they sued Time Warner
to get control of their master recordings and their name? They did that
so they wouldn't have record execs or hot shots to listen to. They cut
their hair because they were tired of that heavy metal cliche. From what
I've seen they don't wear brand names, they haven't changed their sound
drastically to please anyone, and they haven't brought in the dancing girls.
Lars Ulrich went on TRL to promote "I Disappear" and face it, most popular
bands have to promote their music one way or another, and look, Metallica's
been nominated for five awards at the VMA, they've got to be doing something
right. The only thing that puzzles me is their strange friendship with
Kid Rock. It's bad enough that I have to see the Undertaker walk down the
ramp to his music but I can't stomach the fact that they willingly let
Kid use such a great beat so he can write a song about how great he is.
Sorry, I'm still having nightmares about James Hetfield singing "Sad but
True" and then just as he's going to sing the chorus he yells "I AM AMERICAN
BADASS!!" If that ever happens, then yes, they've sold out or gone to hell
or something...

this, but all these bands that you say sold out DONT CARE. Because some
little 14 year old said that a band sold out they should stop promoting
themselves and not be able to make it big which has probably been what
they've been waiting for theyre entire lives??? That makes no sense. And
I bet 99.9999% of you if you were offered that much money would do the
same thing. Money changes everything so if that makes bands like Limp and
Blink sellouts fine but they make good music and boatloads of money while
doing it, and all I have to say is good for them.

BSB and Nsync are good at what they do...
but what they do is not good at all. I think sellout is used too often
and not even worth using on bands. KoRn wore adidas before they got famous
enough for you to see them.(or at least before they were on TRL) Rage Against
the Machine is on Sony but they are about a message besides just music
and what gets a message across better than a big label to get that message
out? Music isn't about hair... Metallica didn't sell out when they cut
their hair or when Load or Re-Load came out. All bands mature they just

hair back.) It's some people's dream to write and make music because it
gives them an out and a way to express feelings. If you call making music
