In my opinion, the Backstreet Boys aren't sell-outs. OK, I wouldn't listen to their CDs if I was being paid (and I have been), but they're making music (even though I doubt they have much input, but anyhoo) that their fans enjoy listening to. Sure, it's manufactured, overproduced trash, but some people like it. Music is something that you should enjoy, not endure, and if people are enjoying the Backstreet Boys then they're doing their job. Same with Britney, N*Sync (or wherever that star goes), Korn, Limp Bizkit etc.

SubXavier
Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? It's not image that propels the artist, it's the music. That's what I try to keep in mind, anyway.

guide
Do any of you think if Kurt Cobain were alive today he would have cut his hair like the Offspring, Pearl Jam, and Dave Grohl?

randomguy
I agree with SubXavier completely. What exactly makes a band or group popular? You going out and requesting their songs and buying their albums. No smart record exec is gonna try to sell an album of someone that at least SOMEONE will like. That's why BSB is popular, you got little girls that like them. Sure getting money for being in a band is nice, I know first hand. That's how you pay for touring, supplies, gear, etc... Bands don't sell out, their record companies sell them out.

SubXavier
*concurs wholeheartedly with Flatline* I was never worried about this whole Napster/MP3/piracy thing, anyway. And on the sellout issue... even though I think that all the "boy bands" do it for the money, girls, whatever, if I like a Backstreet Boys song (cringe at the thought...), I'll listen to it, because *I* like it, not because some guy with a microphone standing beside a monitor tells me to because it's number one on some top ten. Oh, and the guy who says Metallica got him banned from Napster... sorry, you'll just have to be like the rest of us with old, near-unusable computers and go work, get some money and buy the album. Sob.

Flatline
Sweet holy mother of God, do you really think it costs the label $17 to make us a CD? Even more importantly, Do you think Metallica gets even half of that $17? They should be talking to the labels, not Napster. There's something to be said for supporting bands financially, but there are always concerts, and the existence of almost any band (admittedly, I'll pay for Weezer, but certainly not Metallica) is not worth $17 dollars to me.

THE ONE
I THINK THE BEST WAY TO GET NOTICED ISSIMPLE. WRITE A SONG ABOUT ANNEL F#$%ING BRITNEYSPEARS. THE WHOLE WORLD WILL LOVE YOU FOR YOUR HONESTY

What's wrong with Enema?
Ok, if there are any of you that have any Blink182 CDs, you'll notice that Enema of the State is very similar to their first Album, Cheshire Cat. They chose the guitar riffs and melodies a lot more carefully for this album than they did for Dude Ranch. So what's this BS about them being sellouts? They are finally getting the acknowledgement they deserve. You people who label a band sellouts will probably like a song, until it suddenly becomes popular. Not liking a song just because it's popular is just as bad as liking a song just because its popular.

You are a bunch of scabs
If you really like Metallica so much, go out and by their CDs instead of leeching their songs.

Reel Rock
Eminem, Korn, Do you people ever listen to a band that actually knows how to play a guitar.

RejectedMessiah@aol.com
Eminem is the biggest f(_)cking sellout of all time. Eminem fears ICP. I heard Eminem is aiming to do a christmas albumn with Nsync. Also, this midget named Cletus told me that Eminem once was caught on tape rapin a dead dog on the 405 freeway. And when they asked Eminem why he had so much nutt on his face he replied, "if it doenst get all over the place it doesnt belong in your face". See what I mean Eminem is a gay faggat sellout bltch who is probaly having anal with Carson Daly right this minute. It's true! I'ts true!

Kristi P
First of all, Kid Rock is a sell out cuz he wears f*ggot clothes and second of all almost anyone who is on TRl except eminem are sell outs cuz atleast eminem's got the guts to tell it how it is and use a little profanity w/o bein worried that he might hurt someone's feelings

Joey
The number one way to tell if a band has sold out? If they are called Santana

LightRage
Tina, you're quite amusing: "U R just Jelous of Carson cuz he is so hot and your not. BSB 4 Ever!!!" Rule #1, "jelous" is spelled "jealous", Rule #2, "hot" is all opinion, and you're "not" that smart, and that's a fact. Rule #3, BSB are sell outs without a reasonable doubt.

old metal rules
Every time I turn on Channel V (Australia) I see the new (metal)lica video along with a bunch of pop and rap songs. That really says something

go-go
yeah we're all really jealous of carson daly cause he's a fat ugly oaf, who says the stupidest things in the world, and he thinks he's a hard rocker when he's a wannabe boy band member. i think we're all jealous. i wish i were him.

dent
"selling out" is the most overused cliche in the history of music... people slap this label on any and every band that has any success. but there are plenty of bands that used to be good and now aren't if that's what you mean- like limp bizkit and korn!

blacksatan
what's the definition of a sell-out? anyone in the music industry who makes money.

dr fever
hey, aG, if you the next top5 should be about more chlorine in the gene pool...people are stupid and it's only getting worse...like the guy who said Fred Durst is the second coming of John Lennon. Are you kidding me!!?!?!? Lennon's rotting corpse is STILL more talented than Fred Durst ever will be...plain and simple.

OddOne666
Carson is an a**hole...he's on TRL telling all the teenies to go out and buy some hard rock album or some alternative album....bas*ard...he's a f**king bas*ard (damnit..I had the censor my damn comment...when it tells me what i think...damnit LET ME USE MORE PROFANITY

randomguy
carson is a tool and you all know it, but how do bands feed their wives and their kids? not by doing it "for their art". bands like Sugar Ray, who completely change their style, are sell-outs. Bands like Korn and LB, however, just grew musically. Just because they're on MTV doesn't make them sell-outs. How else does everyone hear music? You gotta hear it somehow, otherwise we don't have famous bands anymore... then we would have no Deftones or Papa Roach or any other bands that are sorta underground, but really good. thats just my 2 cents

chronics
when it's on mtv the band sold out simple as that. sellout and metallica after 90 rings a bell. they had a lot of coverage on mtv with junk of this era, while bands that remaines true to their fans get little or no play time

420 guy
selling out is for white crackas like Carson Daly.

You don't need to know
Stephy i agree that no one should have to hear korn and limp but we can't make that choice. Green day and Godsmack are still true to their fans but that is because the got the money. As i said before you would do anything for a million dollors!

Stephy
too many bands are selling out these days and the bands that stay true to themselves are overlooked, like Green Day, Kittie, Slipknot, and Godsmack. No one should have to hear that new Limp Bizkit and KoRn stuff.

ѵ†š
I think metallica is a bunch of rich ßí†Ç|-| §ê¦¦òù†Š that don't care about fans as much as they care about there money

Fµç|< ѵ†š
I think there should be a http://www.anticarsondaily.com site cause he $ucks @55

Billy
I believe your site kicks @55 and I totally agree with this list cause carson daily $ucks

You don't need to know my name.
T-moron you don't know me so shut up okay! anyway saying a band sold out and then saying they are not american is stupid because america has sold out as well.

T-bone
wow look at the moron who wrote before me. some people really do need to be locked up in little rooms before they go postal.

You don't need to know my name
F**K you! You are mother f**k $h*t @$$ dip stick for making that "article" learn what news is like van halen and cancer not making 5 dumb @$$ reason that are really the same dumb thing only writen different. F*c* you.
It must be hard to figure this out when you have a room temperature IQ. Being the kind guy that I am I will spell it out for you. If you want news, go the section that is called "news". The story you were after is listed on the menu to your right (when he posted his *********). It is also listed in the news section. This section is called Top 5, it is a Top 5 list. You know, Top 5 List, not news. See I repeated myself like you accused. You may have inspired a new Top 5.. The Top 5 reason we need to put chlorine in the gene pool. aG

Bob
mp3s aren't cd quality sound, either

Pixie
Since everybody has voiced their opinions, I might as well add mine in. First of all, I think Metallica is going overboard with the whole Napster thing, but I can see their point. If they could put some kind of moderation on it, like letting them put three or four songs per album on the site instead of the whole thing, it would be cool. That would make them more money. Secondly, I don't like Carson, but he can't help the way he is. MTV does that to people. It kills all their brain cells and turns them into blubbering idiots. Just look at all those BSB fans...oops, sorry. That was mean. Seriously, MTV used to be about the music, not money. Now you pay to have your video on MTV and the more money you give the, the more money you get in return. So really talented bands can't afford the price of fame. Maybe people will grow up eventually and realize that money isn't worth sh*t. It buys you stuff, it might even buy you fans, but it won't buy you talent.

flow
Personally, I think Fred Durst is the second coming of John Lennon.. Just wait and see, they will all just fade away eventually. Just like Color Me Badd and Vanilla Ice. It's just a sick fad.

Miguel
how does this top 5 have anything to do with metallica and napster? when you say sell out people think metallica? is that it? if that is the case, then maybe there is something there.

dr fever
i would just like to say that there is a HUGE diffence between a bootleg, live song on napster and a copyrighted song from a released album on napster...big difference.

dude
i think that if the mainstream comes to you and you shun the mainstream(ex. Nirvana or any grunge band) you aren't a sellout. Those guys were in it for the music. now a days all these bands are in it for the money(ex. Limp bizkit, korn, kid rock)I dont get it. MTV became the one it set out not to be. A channel full of sellouts. F**K YOU MTV!!!!!!

me
greedy f@cks ruin everything.money is good, but it's not everything.metallica is great band, but they r not what they used to be.but alot of bands ain't what they used to be.

BadHabit
I don't like MTV either and I don't like TV but just cuz you go on MTV doesn't make you a sell out cuz what if you had an idea when you had a song ,of a video you wanted to do that would be cool , would you do it?I dunno maybe I am wrong? But how else would you get it publicized?

The Voice of Reason
Why does everyone rip on Carson? How about getting on the phone or getting online and voting for bands that aren't sellouts. The bands that are on TRL are not sellouts, well, some of them are, nut the point is that the bands on TRL just have better fans then the real talented bands. So if you hate the music on TRL get together and vote some good stuff. I try to do it by voting for stuff like Buckcherry or Rage Against the Machine or snybody that at least writes their own music.

Crazy Di
I think that any band who has to go on MTV to become popular is a sale out the main ones that come to mind are KoRn and Limp Bizkit

Sporker
i think metallica is a great band still and the people who are all like 'they have enough money, cant the just leave the fans alone' are moronic because metalilca isn't doing it just for themselves, or just for the money. if your going to be a fan of an artist, support them, and buy their album, or borrow it, or something, don't rely on your computer to do it. as for mtv, well, that just goes without saying that they've ruined good music. but leave metallica alone. may the spork be with you.

Carcass
Here's what I think,... Everybody freak out about the fact that mp3 can kill the music industy... Lemme tell ya something. THE music industy are still making a lot of money selling cd at a now ridiculous price. They sold a technology that is now over. They can't admit it right now and will try by any way to get what they used to do before, Money. But that my friend is over! The way they did it is dead. People can now copy an entire cd without loosing any quality. That mean that the music industry will have to find an other way to make money. The fans are angry and won't pay for sh#t. They now try by mp3 and sometime, if they really like it and if that particular album really appeal to them, will buy it. The only way the music industry can now survive is to do a major change. What I suggest is not that revolutionnary. It's in front of everybody's eyes. The music industry will have to do the same way television is doing. FREE FOR ALL. An artist will just put up a web site, will all the songs free to everyone. And put some banner on that site. Ok let say Celine Dion. She could make a deal with Pepsi let's say. Pepsi pay an a$$load of money to Celine Dion. A small band would have smaller deal with a smaller company. And everybody is happy. So now why go on napster to download some songs when you can go directly to the artist site and grab them? That's the way tv works with commercial. Commercial pay for TV show. If it's working with TV, should work with music too. Anyway nobody now is happy to pay 17$ (22$ here in Montreal) for a cd when you know how cheap they're selling blank cd. It cannot goes like this anymore. Game Over! Try something else cuz this don't work anymore. Commercials, the only way! What do you think about that?

GREEN MUSE
RANCID USED TO BE ON MTV AND THEY NEVER SOLD OUT AND NEVER WILL,BUT I DO AGREE WITH JELLO BIAFRA WHEN I SAY MTV GET OFF THE AIR!!!!!

TwIzTeD
I think we should boycott metallica!! Dont buy any of their cds anymore for what they're doin to napster. They've becum a buncha pr*ckz, specially Ulrich that f*g...

Aj
Firstly i think that limp diktwist are sellouts for getting napster to sponsor there gigs so that not only Limp Dicktwists fans going but napsters loser fans are going too,and secondly i'd be pised off to if some aszhole was stealing my music!

Baboonicus
Damn Napster and damn Metallica!!!! I onbly downloaded 2 of their songs, and it wasn't even me! It was my friend who's a huge-assed fan of Metallica! But HE still has Napster! As for Carson Daly (the name alone makes me shudder) don't get me started....

dimmaen
I think it's weird how bands (often punk-) change their music after signing on a major label. Who makes them do that stuff? They had great songs like "American Jesus", "F*** Armageddon.." and a hole lot of others who was offending to a lot of people, and then they signed on to Sony and suddenly they were singing about rasism and other non-offending stuff. That $uck$. I think bands should develop, but not because money and big bosses.

Dude
An example of selling out would be Aerosmith and Metallica and group that really NEVER SOLD out was AC/DC just judging by the last album Stiff Upper Lip it kicks ass and goes back to their roots sounds really good

BadHabit
The minute they sign a contract with a recording company, promising future albums, that it a sell-out.

Azure
When "Video killed the radio star", it wasn't the DJ that died. It was the artistic freedoms that make the bulk of our "classic rock". Before videos and having to sell your look, the good songs were made. The ones with no videos.. nothing but the music to sell. It wouldn't surprise me if the videos relesed in the next few years, have artists holding Pepsi cans or selling some kind of something IN the video. It happens a lot in movies.. and you PAY to get in and watch it. I wish we could go back to the days when "sell out" was a ticket sales term, not an eventuality.

sexy
...and metallica suks

sexy
im glad someone else realized how much carson suks, could tey possibly get more a dweeby , senseless puppet?

shaft
i think korn's a sell out piece of $hit and mtv is gay.

???
I hate Carson Daly he's an ugly prick.

S
Who the hell is Carson Daly?

X
Why would Metallica care if people are getting their songs for free. Those a$$holes are probably rich enough that I don't think a bunch of kids getting their songs of Napster is going to put a huge dent in their already huge paycheck

nuunee
wow I'm glad I don't like Metallica :)

Vliss
I love you antimusic-guy! peace, love, chaos & hatred- Vliss

jubjub
carson daly is a gay

Melly Medic
Carson Daly....was he ever cool? i remember when no one knew who he was...now i am forced to pass by mtv studios and yell out "Carson Daly is gay" and all other mean things like that...ecch...why can't people strive NOT to be cool...?!

Ell
CARSON DALY S*CKS ON HARD DICKS!

nothing
does metallica think they'll make more money this way? now their fans who had a few mp3s from napster and would have bought their next album won't, because of what metallica's doing. so in the end, they're losing money from this.

Fatal Pawn
ok, i accidentally hit enter. anyway, to continue. obviously this will decrease the fans motivation to go buy your cds or actually PAY for your music. when that happens, you're no longer making money. everything you work for in the studio, every song you put effort into, is just going to be put up on napster to be stolen so people wont have to pay and support you. then you cant afford to pay your bills.. music is no longer profitable.. then you are forced to quit your musical career altogether. no more music for you. obviously this situation has not yet had time to progress this far, but it is very quickly on it's way to being exactly as i say. and why are you all getting so angry at metallica? because they want their fans and listeners to respect them and show enough support for them to PAY FOR THEIR MUSIC. can you imagine the nerve of a band expecting such a thing? boy, what jerks [ cant use profanity.. fuq censorship ;/ ], right? if any of you could see past the next 15 minutes, or the next 15 bucks, you'd see organizations like napster do no favor for you OR the music industry. if you want to continue having GOOD talentend bands such as metallica, i suggest you show them the respect they have EARNED from all of you over the last 20 years. why are bands like pantera not suing napster? first, you have all proven your ignorance and eagerness to jump to self-serving misguided delusions and they are afraid to speak what they think for fear of exactly what you are doing. second, metallica is already doing it.. why would they risk their necks and put themselves at your mercy [what a truly terrible thought that is] when metallica has already begun? metallica doesnt NEED your money. they've been making money for 20 years.. millions.. they're all millionairs. this isn't about money.. this is about respect, about the integrity of you so-called self-proclaimed "fans", and about the future of music in general. if any of you have anything else humorously ignorant to say, e-mail me.. pawn@lamestain.com.. or if you are interested in semi-intelligent conversation or have anything CONSTRUCTIVE to say other than "fuq metallica they're fags", please feel free to e-mail me as well. i wont be back here to check this board, so if you all feel the need to reply to my comment[s] here knowing that i wont be back to defend myself or my views, feel free to show your weakness and dissuasion from discussing the topic with someone that's perhaps not quite as stupid as the majority of you have proven yourselves to be. have a wonderful day.

Fatal Pawn
i dont think metallica would have taken this so far had so many people not gone totally overkill on it. as always, the minority ruin it for the majority. no one cared this much about mp3s being downloaded illegaly until napster came out. why? because there are peoply on napster who have thousands of mp3s which they paid nothing for. some of them have high speed connections allowing may users to also download those illegal files. metallica isnt going to sue someone who makes a tape of the black album. they would sue someone who made 10,000 copies of the black album and gave them away for free. can you blame them? lets see any of you spend time .. almost your whole life actually .. involved in music. you make music for the fans. that is your JOB. that is what pays your bills. that is how you survive. all of a sudden a new file format comes out.. mp3s.. they make it easier for people to copy your music and send it around.. ok, no big deal.. then a service called napster comes out.. allowing anyone anywhere unlimited access to virtually every song you have ever written.

ShivasIrons
Now all this arguing is fine and good, but no one has realized the stupidity of this band who say, and I quote, "It's sick that our art is being treated like a commodity, rather than the art that it is." Anyone who thinks Metallica is anything more than musical commodity is deluded, or in the case of Lars Ulrich, egocentric.

I Hate Napster After All This B.S.
Napster's a pirating piece of $hit.

Spider
That if you are a band that has anything to do with MTV or carson daily!

hells disciple
Fever you think I am taking this napster thing too seriously? If anyone is taking it too seriously it is Metallica attacking napster the way they are. And by the way crdeath27 don't call people dumb fu@ks before YOU get YOUR facts straight. If you were banned from napster by Metallica you have the choice to fill out what is called a counter notification. This notifies napster that you would like your account back. Napster then sends this counter notification to Metallica and they then can either sue you for "copyright infringement" or let you have your account back. Metallica have 14 business days to respond to the document after they receive it or you get your account back. So yes crdeath27 Metallica just might be suing their very own fans. Also it is all bad enough that they are suing but for something so hypocritical. Can you believe they encourage fans to make illegal bootlegs of their concerts but get up in arms about napster which is basically a more advanced form of underground tape trading which is what made Metallica as popular as they are today

Dr Fever
I think a few people are taking this napster thing a little to seriously!

LightRage
Tina, it's "Jealous" NOT "Jelous" and Carson Daly is the biggest súck-up ever.

Zim Zum
I think a sellout is someone who changes their music in order to make more money. Example: Blink 182. Honestly, hardly anyone had ever heard of them until Enema Of The State, and now they're MTV's kooky-yet-lovable-punk-band. A lot of people say that Metallica are sell-outs because of Load and Reload, but I think that actually did the opposite. It kind of drove fans away. Then everyone started listening to Megadeth, and one thing led to another, and you know...

hells disciple
F!CK METALLICA!!!!! I JUST GOT MY NOTICE THAT I HAVE BEEN BANNED BY METALLICA FROM NAPSTER!! at least i can still get in and listen to the music i downloaded of REAL bands that won't turn on their fans like PANTERA,SLAYER,and BLACK SABBATH. i don't care if it was the lawyers that made the decision METALLICA crossed the line

Crdeath27
Hey dumb fu@k, Metallica isn't suing their fans, their suing napster. If you're gonna bash them at least get your sh!t straight. Ignorant @ss wigger.

anarchy chick
most bands on mtv sold out and limp bizkit isnt rock and kid rock is rap!!

Dr Fever
#1b. they're name is limp bizkit

Michael
Just listen to MTV ,then thats all there is to it!

Tina
U R just Jelous of Carson cuz he is so hot and your not. BSB 4 Ever!!!

Fred Durst
#1 they sue their fans

Kori
Sell outs are party poopers, and so is carson daly... um... point proven.
