If you choose to see everything that is critical of hip-hop having to do with race than that is your issue. If you haven't seen anything critical of rock trends here then you really haven't looked around enough. As for rock slangs, I'm sure I could come up with a few but can you think of a rock slang as silly as "bling-bling"? Also you are saying that all blacks and hispanics listen to and subscribe to the hip-hop culture? That's a pretty broad generalization. And I would have no problem telling someone to their face that says "bling-bling" or "ill" etc to my face how silly it is. This top 5 was a tongue in cheek jab at lame slang terms from hip-hop that have spilled over into mainstream culuture not a race since I don't generally put people into a box based on their race but form an opinion based on who they are as individuals. But if you want to see racism and predujice in everything then that's your option but there is a difference.

Posted byWhat's the point of this article.:
Trent, tongue in cheek can be appreciated as long as you can spread the wealth. My only point is how many ridiculous rock slang articles have you read here? I'm not, and if you read my comments in my previous post, calling the writer a racist. I am saying that he is predujiced against blacks. Hip-Hop and it's language is a culture, a culture that was created by black's and latino's. If you are to jab at the language that culture inspires, how are you not jabbing at the people that use it. They are obviously the creaters and users of the slang. If you were to criticize my use of language I would consider that a personal attack, anyone would. Also, look at the writer's response, he was completely serious even if he was trying to be humerous. aG - wow, you scream foul at the generalizations made about you, yet you turn around in the same paragraph and generalize about hip-hop. "I'm supposed to respect a style of music and sub-culture that promotes crime, degradation of women, and racism? Not gonna happen" do you really believe that all hip-hop follows this course. Have you listened to De La Soul, Tribe, Common, Talib Kweli, El-P and/or Company Flow, The Roots etc... There is a lot more to hip-hop than what you've heard on the radio. Much like Rock & Roll most of the true artist lay under the radar of radio. Also, I have heard all of these artists at one time or the other use these terms in either their music or interviews. Lastly, the problem people have isn't that these terms relate only to Hip-Hop, but rather they are terms that are used in everyday life. Slang isn't defined by music, you said it yourself, it's cultural...please explain what's the culture behind the creation and propogation of hip-hop. My only comment to you is go outside right now, find some hip-hop fans and tell them to their face how stupid/lame these sayings are. Then come and write your next article with a the one finger that isn't broken. Yo!

Posted bywlg:
I know! How about you be creative and write an article that DOESN'T somehow manage to incorporate Missy Elliot? I'm sure Missy would be flattered that you have a crush on her, but jesus christ, give it a rest already.

Posted bynot led:
This rant seems to be treading on the "Tuning Out: Why Radio Sucks!" ground. Mainstream hip-hop(though I hate to call it that, since it is all just pop), has decayed the soul of the art(And yes, to some it is art). Hip-hop is like rock, the amount it gets played on the radio is directly proportional to how much it sucks, for the most part. It is not truly a "sub-culture that promotes crime, degradation of women, and racism", it just makes the most money that way.

Posted byRev Jesse Jackson Sharpton:
No Trent you can not have humor at the expense of the fine young men of hip-hop providing a postive rolemodel for young African Americans. This is racist filth. Who cares if hip-hop provides the stupidest slang terms, if you since anything out made by African Americans then you must be a racist! How dare these redneck cracker racists say anything bad about the positive hip-hop culture! We're a minority we are allowed to have double standards and be hypocrits. In America it is only ok to hate white cracker males. Get that in your head you racist, nazi, kkk loving, pasty fast white devils! Country slang isn't as funny as Hiphop slang but we did borrow ye'all from them.

Posted byTrent:
See, I wasn't gonna post anything, but now I've got to...take a look at the article. The writer's not been serious. It's a light-hearted jab at hip-hop, and reasonably funny. Maybe you guys need to take the article (and yourselves) a little less seriously.

Posted byaG:
Love the attacks and the "generalizations" thrown at me since I don't subscribe to hip-hop culture or slang. It has nothing to do with race, but a sub-culture that one race is a predominant member of. I'm supposed to respect a style of music and sub-culture that promotes crime, degradation of women, and racism? Not gonna happen but go on with your "blind" attacks on me and the Limp Bizkit, video games, comments. I find the hypocrisy funny. But I will say take a good look in the mirror before you toss out accusations. You may have one finger pointed at me, but you have three pointing back at yourself.

Posted byaG:
Sounds like you are the one with race issues "What's the point". It's not about race it's cultural. If you can't see the difference then you are the one with the problem, yo!

Posted byWhat's the point of this article.:
I won't scream racist if you'll agree to the fact that you're directly attacking hip-hop and the language that permeates the music. You mention the fact that you could've attacked country and the slang that surrounds that music, but you didn't. I'd be willing to bet that you've never even paid attention to or thought twice about country music slang. Why? Well because the vast majority of country music is performed by white artists. Don't be so ignorant as to believe that you disliking the way people talk isn't a form of prejudice. I don't know if your a racist or not, and I really don't care, but I do think your prejudiced against blacks, their music and their slang. Otherwise you would have included "sweet" in your splurb. And a note to hahhahah you are in fact a blantent racist. Next time voice your view in a clear concise arguement and someone may value what you have to say. Oh, and next time your playing your limp bizkit album bitching about hip-hop, remember where it comes from. Don't hate the playa, hate the game.

Posted byAK~47:
Just because the level of education in the previous posts far extended your reach of comprehension. Does not mean that you have to call anyone an idiot. Why not tell the people what you think about the "ARTICLE" instead of trying to make yourself look like a bigger idiot and try to defain the people that are simply stating their opinions on the SITUATION at hand. So I am going to bring it down a tad we bit and say "F*CK YOU, and HAVE A NICE DAY"

Posted byhahhahah:
AK-47 at least you got one thing right, you're an idiot.. yo!

Posted byhahhahah:
who wrote these pro hip-hop bs posts? twelve year olds? go back to the mall you idiots

Posted byAK~47:
Oh WOW, that must have been the MOST SINGLE idiotic article I have ever read. In fact I would go to the lengths of dubbing myself idiotic for even reading the entire article. "understand your roots" Thanks for that very noble post. I could copy and past it in this 1 1/2" box here and it would fit my position like a glove ( oops used some slang there I hope I don't end up on a top 5 list for that one ) Whoever wrote this article, I hope that you understand that you went to great lengths to make yourself a righteous pompous. Good day and stick to video games.

Posted byunderstand your roots:
These terms, predominately used in hip-hop, are no different than the slang used in blues,(the main root of modern music), Rock and Roll, pop music, Heavy Metal and jazz. If all of you ONLY listen to classical music, then I could understand an iota of angst, but that's where the buck stops. I agree that more intellectual slang has been created elsewhere besides hip-hop, but that doesn't make it any less relevent. Slang is merely a sign of the times from social group to social group, it has existed as long as spoken language and will continue to evolve, so I guess you're just going to have to deal with it...oh, was that slang. Yes it was.

Posted byruru:
who wrote this article? A twelve year old?

Posted byj:
"you should burn in hell for that, you twerp"... anyone else find the comedy in such an absurd statement?! as for 'slang' words in the dictionary: any word can be used as slang. just because it exists in a dictionary with a true definition does not mean you won't find it used in other ways as slang. a great example is, as 'your mom' said, the word gay (is that censored? should i type "g-ay"?), which means happy- see thesaurus.com for more synonyms- but is used, especially among 12-17 year olds, to mean stupid, dumb, lame, if you will. that's slang, even though you'll find it in the dictionary. sticking with the glbtia references, how about the word queer? means weird. it's in a barbra streisand song for pete's sake. yet it's used as slang. 'your mom' may be angry, verbose, and prone to obscenities, but he (well, she, i suppose?) certainly has a point.

Posted byjenn:
since when is 'drop' hip hop slang? it's usually used pertaining to rock.

Posted byYOUR MOM:
you know the most ridiculous fu-cking slang i'm seeing on this dumb ass message board? the use of g-ay and h-omo. are you fu-cking kidding me? do you know what g-ay means? it means happy, you morons. joyous. delightful. damn that sh-it is so sweet! so nice! so cheerful! yeah, that makes a hell of a lot of sense. know what h-omo means? means the same. you're ALL h-omos, did you know that? h-omo fu-cking sapiens you fu-cking idiots. jesus christ get a fu-cking dictionary. you all use your own slang, deal with it or go fu-cking send a letter to your damn congressman. i mean come on, open your eyes. urban culture just like any other culture has its own dialects or accents (depending on the community) and its own culture, language, styles, everything. DEAL WITH IT. fo shizzle ma nizzle sounds rather silly, but so be it. stop your whining and grow the fu-ck up, maybe try going to your local community college and taking some fu-cking writing courses. fu-ck you, and your cat.

I wish I could think of some country music slang so we can get away from the hip hop thing, but I'm not sure that there is such a thing as "country slang".

dutton and herb : ( if in fact you're not the same person, I bet you are )--- here we have sound thinking and individualism at its finest. Let's analyze with a few illustrious excerpts. "probably some suburban high school outcast" , "all the 'POPULAR' kids who get the 'HOT' girls use that lingo", "get a life"--- here we have nothing but a social coward, forfeiting his individuality for the comforts of peer acceptance. I know your brown-nosed kind very well---and what you fear is rejection. You're a sad "tag-along". You swim in whatever direction the current is running, because you are too emotionally weak to swim against it. There are billions of your kind. I'm hardly surprised at your stupidity.

Rap the last new thing in the past 20 years? What about "new wave", techno, and industrial? Also, I'm sure the guys who composed specifically for the synthesizer fit in there someplace.

Posted byDeadSun:
Your post name says it all--- for GirlFromMars. That post scales new heights in musical/cultural obliviousness and absurdity.

Posted byGirlFromMars:
The truth is that rap is the last new thing that happened in music for the past 20 years. And please don't say grunge. I am not American, so this might be why the slang doesn't annoy me. Not all rap music is good, but I believe that it is much more interesting than most of today's contrived rock music. All of your comments about the slang or the music must be exactly the same as the comments parents made for rock 'n' roll in the 50's. I don't want to say it's about race, but from reading all these posts it seems to me that you feel threatened by black culture in general, not just the slang. And what's that crap about the slang belonging in the streets and not in the music? If the people that make the music are from the streets, they should express themselves as they best see fit.

How could you leave out tite, little one, birdman (that metal-mouthed moron from the Cash Money gang), Gangsta, fakin', and joint, such as "That joint iz hot!" God those words annoy me. I think anybody from the Cash Money Millionaires should be shot, powerbombed on their kitchen floor, and forced to watch old Hulk Hogan matches. Those guys "helped" popularize the annoying words we hear now.

this month im really taking my article writing to the next level.i do love when people say that, and 9 times out of 10,the level appears to be the same one the artist was on during their previous work

Posted byMr Soulman:
"Taking it to the next level" What is that? Everyone who believes to have improved at their work/craft calls it "taking it to the next level." It seems like everyone has been taking their stuff to the next level, but they can't even describe what that means.

Posted byDreamy Rover:
I'll clear that up. In the dictionary, Lame (as a noun): Someone who doesn't understand what is going on. And (as adjective): Pathetically lacking in force or effectiveness. Not slang, guys. U can call SLIPKNOT lame & u wouldn't be wrong at all.

Posted bya girl:
I don't understand how "lame" is slang. Lame is in the dictionary. "Bling", "Yo" are not.

Posted byTK138:
Yeah, I like some Haterade every once in a while. I actually found it pretty clever when I first heard it.

Posted byGatorade:
any of you drink "haterade?"

Posted bydead:
how the hell is "boring" a slang word?

Posted byShayn:
I think the most ill-used word today is Rap. Rap is supposed to be about someone "rapping" on a subject, talking about what they're thinking. Lots of brainpower involved. I don't see much out there. There's a difference between rapping and the inability to sing, so you talk, or mess up sound like Nelly and Missy Elliot.

Posted byMr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
I myself agree that the word "gay" is the most incorrectly used word out there today.

Posted byPaul:
Doesn't really matter WHAT words you use or if it's annoying to you or whatever... It's how you say them and what you mean... I grew up around black hip-hop heads for my entire school career, and I slip into that "lame slang" once in a while. I don't look down on myself for doing it and I don't look down on others for doing it. They're expressing themselves in a way they know best. Whatever, you know? It doesn't matter. In fact, I think the terms "lame," "gay," and "boring" are FAR, FAR more irritating than any words used in predominant slang today. Admittedly, I find it hilarious when I use stupid words satirically or ironically in some kind of humorous context. But goddamn... I cringe when I hear someone use it casually like it ISN'T absolutely moronic.

Posted byThE pUnK 420:
i think the best word is gansta!! seriously

Posted byGREENMUSE:
i love the aussie word"dunny"for toilet its so hilarious.i love their slang.

Posted byhate:
I hate it when moronic suburban kids say "ghetto" or act as if -izzle is an actual suffix. It's also a pain in the ass when things are purposely misspelled just to be cool. I blame this all on rap. Never has there been something that has destroyed the intelligence of youth. Unfortunately, there was a story on how someone tried to kill a few rap stars with a gun, but the bullets missed them. When will rap die from the mainstream?

Posted byThatFilthyStinkingHobo:
Australian culture was built on slang - but not cr@p like that. "maggot, mate, barbie, coldie, beaut, sweet, bloody, sheila" and so on and so forth - and i love it.

Posted bycRap "Artist":
Get on the wheels of 'steal' and be sure to pay your sampling royalties! I dont even have to make fun of cRap just watch their videos. freaking 'bling-bling' and 'beotches'. i feel most sorry for the black artists who are making real music like jazz and r&b (and even rock) but are being stereotyped because of their 'big-pimpin' brothas and sistas. i still pay homage to Jimi by blowing my smoke on his poster on my wall.

Posted byBuffcode18:

Posted byGuru of Everlasting Wisdom:
I really hate people calling every damn thing "crazy." Maybe once in awhile is okay, but people calling the most normal things you could find crazy is retarded. People use "literally" wrong all the time too. "Man, that literally broke my heart!" Yeah, man, your heart sure is bleeding out its contents and you're dead. Literally.

Posted byMr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
"THIS IS THE REMIX" should be replaced "THIS IS THE REHASH" since most remixes are just that anyways. Rarely will you see a remix of a song that could actually be a cover song, and not just a watered-down rehash.

AS FOR R&B AND RAP THEY ALL RAP ABOUT THE SAME THING AND THEY ALL WHINE ABOUT BEING DUMPED. ALSO THE RADIO HAS SERIOUSLY LST ITS EDGE. THEY USED TO PLAY GOOD ROCK MUSIC BUT NOW ITS JUST ALL THESE POP BANDS. POPULAR MUSIC PISSES ME OFF PERIOD.

You know what's really horrid? When they take regular words and bastardize the spellings in order to look "cool" (which isn't even a real thing anyways). You know, like when they say "Da Bomb" or "Where my dogz b at). That's irritating as hell. And don't "diss" slange completely. Keep in mind that the way that the word "troll" is used on this website a lot could also be considered slang.

Posted bybungle:
obviously to anyone who listens to real music those slang words belong on the street in an inner city and not in music. ive always hated "bay-beh"

Posted byDeadSun:
"Dagon"---DeadSun happens to uphold your theory, too, but it is nevertheless ONE theory out of dozens. We cannot come across as if it were the ONLY one, but I DO believe it was a fabrication of Lovecraft's---there is hard evidence to support this view.
