Posted by they don't call me:
Everyone that posts here on a regular basis is probably between the ages of 12-16. No, that can't be right, kids that age wouldn't be familiar with O'Rourke, Thompson, et al. Oh well, honest mistake.

I spent the last ten minutes reading this article to learn something I actually figured out five years ago...whenever I get offers for free magazine subsriptions and such, I generally choose Spin over Rolling Stone, but neither is an authority on music I actually give a damn about...unfortunately, the offers for free subscriptions never include Guitar World or Barely Legal...

I wouldn't have it any other way

this site's fixation with almost famous and the thompson/bangs juggernaut is funny.. because these people would plainly have despised this site through-and-through.

Posted by KizzyMarie:
I am not sure if I should laugh or cry after reading this... the sad reality is that all of this is true. (And will not change)But as much as I am opposed to any form of selling out I believe that RS does handle there business. The articles may be more mainstream and there advertising may be trendy but everyone knows that is what sells. As an up and coming writer I could only dream of writing for such an amazing publication.

Posted by AntiGuy Fan:
RS has always been somewhat of a huge joke, along with Spin, in the underground music industry. Thanks AntiGuy, for another illuminating piece.

Posted by GREENMUSE:
i was invited to p diddys party, but turned him down, all my designer clothes are in the shop.

Posted by you will obey me.:
ya...they're not so great.

Posted by slimer:
Hey, RS did just have a review on Meshuggah's new album (which really surprised me)so they do deserve a tiny iota of respect for that (of course all the crap bands they review probably cancels that out). And I am disappointed that this site doesn't have a Meshuggah review, so somebody better get on that fast (can you tell that I like Meshuggah?)!

Posted by dreibel:
Mr. huh?, if you want to find that issue of the parody, it'll be easy to spot - it has a painting of Bob Dylan playing Trivial Pursuit. Like I said, I think it was the Harvard Lampoon who put it out (they have a history of putting out perfect magazine parodies, they did a Newsweek parody in around '84 ("Nuclear Arms and Terrific Legs: How Waepons Buildup Threatens Today's Supermodels") that rocked.

Posted by Trendkill138:
You know, I recently thought about changing my handle to TK138. I might as well.

Posted by SMIC:
TK138, RS was always more or less a mainstream magazine, meaning they cater to the general public and have a broad readership. You hit exactly on my point though, they used to also give info on more obscure stuff as well (albiet obscure music geared to hit the mainstream, i don't think this is bad BTW) I would guess, although i have not read it in wahile, that there are probably some album review and stuff of better newer music tucked in there. back to my point, being a "mainstream" magazine with a broad customer base they have great power to bring attention to new bands and musicians. The one band I can think of they helped break this year is the Yeah Yeah Yeah's possibly the worst shyte to hit the garage punk scene yet. Worse because this was total and complete jumping on the bandwagon on the part of RS as this patetic excuse for a band was allready getting alot of attention from some name dropping by Julian Casablancas garage-punk's ultimate tool. I really think RS could afford to add conetent about some serious new music without comprmising sales, but what do I know I am not a corporate scumbag who counts the bottom line.

Posted by you will obey me.:
werd...ha...ha. here's my take on the whole situation. eminem...ya. no comment needed. Moby...jealous because eminem did a duet w/elton and not him. also, he just wants it up the a$$ from mr mathers. also f*ck _________(please insert the name sean combs is currently calling himself). F*ck mtv & the vma's. f*ck rolling stone. hell, f*ck the whole f*cking corrupted music industry, and anyone connected with them. i think that's all, no more f*cks for tonight. the end. f*ck.

Posted by OMG:
Anyone who gets there political info from RS is a moron and their idea of Culture is a p.diddy party.

Posted by pick:
TK138, I still enjoy the occasional RS article, too. I remember when RS was banned from my house for its "foul" language. I read it anyway and learned a lot about politics, music and culture. I like magazines such as Vanity Fair and GQ that publish interesting and often thought-provoking articles. So what if they have ads? Everything in America has advertising.

Posted by Trendkill138:
RS wasn't "always mainstream". When I started reading it, back around '88/'89, I used to read about bands like Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, and Soul Asylum long before they were famous. I also learned a lot about the history of Rock because of it. Most of what aG said is true, but despite all the teenybopper crap they've been churning out the last couple of years, I still enjoy reading it.

Posted by Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
You all got to hear this. I took the chance to check out the article on the VMA's in the latest RS issue. It seems that Eminem is continuing his feud with Moby. They showed a picture of him giving the finger to Moby. Now, all Moby ever did was say that he doesn't agree with what Eminem says, but that he'll fight to the death for his right to say it. Obviously, despite his claims to the contrary, Eminem does care about what other people think about him, or else he wouldn't pick fights with them. Now get this, later after the show, Eminem approached Avril Lavigne and said that he really respects her album. LOL It doesn't stop there. After the show, many were invited to a P. Diddy party called "The Greatest Party of all Time" in which everyone was informed in their invitations to wear clothes by only the top designers and "not to bother the sexy people". Now if P. Diddy isn't an example of someone who sucks Satan's c0ck, then I don't know what it.

god bless america. everyone who works for mtv and rollingstone are a bunch of f*cking corporate wh*res. god damn clones, they wouldn't know talent if it f*cked them in the a$$. hendrix is god. the end.

Posted by Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
Monkess' talentless opener, Jimi Hendrix? LOL I simply must find that issue.

Posted by SMIC:
Too True, RS, always mainstream, has degraded itself to complete and utter irrelevancy. These days it has about as much to do with music as MTV. Truly this is an unfortunate development. RS could both cater to the lowest common denominator and act to educate people about new and emerging music. They could keep Love on the cover but sneak in a few meaningful articles about music between the gloss for the truly curiouos teenybobbers. Sadly they dont. They will keep on pumping style over music and yes Maxim and 17 are good comparisons.

Posted by dreibel:
okay, if you guys want to be Hunter Thompson and cameron Crowe, can I be Lester Bangs? :) But regarding hilarious, you should've seen the war that went on between Rolling Stone and the band Queen in the 1970s, RS were calling Queen "fascist" and dangerous, and it was amazing seeing all the hatchet jobs on reviews of Queen performances throughout the 70s. There was even one interview with the band in which the interviewer made it clear right out front that he hated the band! Once Freddie and Roger figured that out, they spent the rest of the interview giving out nonsense answers to the little git. And RS was gullible enough to print them! BTW, I think it was the Harvard Lampoon who put out this hilarious sendup of the magazine in the 1980s, that included these faux reveiws in which they slammed Jimi Hendrix ("slow death in a purple haze! We've seen this "Jimi" Hendrix before and he's a total bore - he mumbles, he sets his guitar on fire and, unlike a brother, he doesn't play the blues - at all. When are the Monkees going to drop these loser opening acts and find artists with real talent to open?" Great satire!

Posted by SubXavier:
Courtney's really ugly. Like, anorexic morphine junkie ugly.

Posted by you will obey me.:
F*ck you and your MoM. Hole does not even approach the talent of Nirvana. Admittedly, she is better than fred durst, and eminem...not much, but better. Still...i would rather have more nirvana released, if it meant never hearing another hole song again. F*ck courtney love, if you must man, but maybe keep her locked in your closet until she agrees to quit being such a stupid b*tch. or maybe we just need to take away her drugs, some people obviously can't handle themselves.

Posted by LB:
Thanks aG (if it was you) for whacking that last post. Sometimes I go a bit too far. I'll try to be a good tool, sir.

Posted by Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
By the way, UNCUT RULES!!! I don't always agree with them, but they have FAR MORE credibility than Rolling Stone could ever have.

Posted by pick:
Over the weekend, I was looking at US magazine. Then I came back to my apartment and looked at my roomie's RS and they really weren't all the different. Rolling Stone isn't horrible, but it's really expensive, too ad-based and not on the cutting edge. That's the problem with mass media today. Don't blame RS for being "sellouts" or "posers" when every publication from the greatest newspaper on earth, The New York Times, and the TV show "Good Day Live" adhere to the unwritten standards of media. RS does review a ton of unorthodox albums and movies, and, as always, the photography is excellent. Hunter Thompson and P.J. Rourke were great in their time, but like all other journalists and news people a new breed must emerge. Just look at what happened when Walter Cronkite retired. He was the most trusted man in America and everyone thought his departure was the death of TV news, but look at how the big three recovered. What am I trying to say? All RS is trying to do is make money, and who can fault them for that? They don't exploit children to do it, they don't underpay their staff and they don't lowball every other magazines to get ahead.

Posted by Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
Master of Meth is either a troll, a teenybopper, or both. Or maybe they themself actually work for Rolling Stone and are trying to bash Nirvana since they're no longer "cool" like shock-monkey Eminem. As for mister Slim Shady, I will admit that he has some lyrical talent, but mostly wastes it on stupid songs talking about how bad he thinks he is and how gay he thinks everyone else is. Some of his more serious stuff (i.e. "Stan", "Cleaning out My Closet") are hard to really take seriously at all when he comes out with songs like "Without Me" in which he does nothing short of proclaiming himself the meaning of life and how everyone else's lives would be completely empty without him.

Posted by MoM:
Oh, and "you will obey me"? I would definitely f*ck Courtney Love if you would bring her over. How dare you compare her to Fred and Kurt? Some people just don't have any taste!!!

Posted by Master of Meth:
There is nothing on this Earth which can compare to the all-out sucking of Fred Durst. Maybe someone should let him use Cobain's shotgun.

Posted by David:
One writer reviews each album. So it is only one persons opinion. Besides, have you ever bought an album because RS liked it? I rest my case.

Posted by you will obey me.:
p.s.- f*ck courtney love; f*ck courtney love; f*ck courtney love; f*ck courtney love; f*ck courtney love; i for one want her to forget making her sh|tty music and release the nirvana material instead. in conclusion: f*ck courtney love.

Posted by you will obey me.:
cobain's lyrics make perfect sense to me...hmmm, i guess that says something. Dr Fever- i must disagree fred durst writes deep lyrics...well about as deep as britney spears' personality. ok so they're really fu{king shallow. personally i think we're all fu{ked...all the great musicians are either dead, corrupted, or too fu{king messed up from drug use to go on making good music. and the new bands with any talent at all, will never make a lasting name for themselves because there are too many stupid a$$holes out there who continue and buy sh*t like eminem, limp bizkit, and hole, for any real music to gain popularity. unless we stop buying the talentless sh|t the record companies will never put out any talented musicians work. fu{k this i'm going back to bed.

Posted by GREENMUSE:
cheers to antiguy,i actully forgot rolling stone actully still exisited,i only thought of it as exsisting only in name and to hand out"thrill ride of the year"movie reveiws,on movies released in january.the last time i picked up a copy was around 1996 or so,only because i was bored stiff at someones house.and it was too chock full of ads for yuppie products for my taste then too.and i wasnt the jaded old man i am now,so it must be bad nowadays. i get 97% of my news from antimusic, and for more specific news,i just head to bands webpage.is an expose on spin next antiguy?i hate them soo much*shakes fist menaingly*.ooh if antiguy is cameron crowe, and fever is hunter thompson,i get to be alfred jarry.

Posted by Dr Fever:
Meth..you obviously have the iq of a retarded monkey if you think you can even COMPARE Eminem to Kurt Cobain. Now, you've got two strikes (the eminem comment and the Hole fandom)...I suppose next you'll tell us that Fred Durst writes music full of depth and creativity.

Posted by MoM:
And I'm not trying to start flame war. Eminem's words are funny and intelligent. Cobain's words were retarded junkie babble.

Posted by Master of Meth:
No. Wrong. I'm a Hole fan. The 24 hours of Courtney was the best thing ever on MTV. And braces scrapes the bark on the wood. It hurts.

Posted by The Original Jackass:
Rolling stone sucks more then a cheap 5 dollar whore with braces

Posted by aG:
The truth is he is probably a diehard Nirvana fan trying to get people to start praising them or just to talk crap and have fun. You know the type fever?? Maybe it's Lars who is pissed cuz Nevermind spoiled their momentum from the Black album? or maybe he just is that stupid, there are plenty of stupid people in the world as you well know.

Posted by Dr Fever:
I'm just trying to figure something out...is Master of Meth that stupid or is he just trying to start one of those "flame like hell" wars. I'm guessing a little bit of both.

Posted by Master of Meth:
You're crying that they gave Nevermind 3 stars? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't RS use a 5 star system? Stop whining! I'd give that album 3 stars too, but it would be 3 out of 10. Eminem has far more talent than Kurt Cobain could have ever dreamed of having.

Posted by VampireRyan:
Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly wouldn't know good records if it bit them in the ass.

Posted by Dr Fever:
Two things: First, if aG is the Cameron Crowe of antiMUSIC then that clinches it...i'm the Hunter Thompson! haha. Second; I read the new issue at work and, yeah, it's pretty damn horrid. Raving about the VMA's (earth to RS: THEY SUCKED Balls!) and making the horny fat chick out to be some kind of hero or something. I shake my head in amazement. I've got the '1000 yard stare'. I will now go on record...the only good things about Rolling Stone EVER are as follows: A) Kurt Cobains'"Corporate Magazine Still Suck" tshirt they ran on the cover after Nevermind broke. And, B)Everything Hunter Thompson ever contributed. F**k Rolling Stone! Viva La antiMUSIC!

Posted by Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
Don't forget that this is the same magazine that gave Nirvana's legendary Nevermind album 3 stars when it came out (still does. No revisionism on that yet) and gave 4 stars to brain-dead Andrew W.K.'s debut album (proclaiming him the "saviour of rock") while also giving 2 stars to lyrical genius Aimee Mann's latest album. Not to mention having never even reviewed Days of the New's incredible RED album. They even just last year named Britney Spears as "The Coolest Person of the Year" followed closely by Fred Durst and the overrated Alicia Keys, but with no mention of the far superior India Arie. The same magazine that's hailing garage-punk knock-off artists such as The Strokes the "saviours of rock" (although I'll give them credit for The White Stripes, as they are actually rather original). Rolling Stone hasn't always screwed up though. They once proclaimed The Clash as the best new band of the year when punk broke. But that's one of the VERY FEW exceptions. Might I also say that of all the things I suggested posting an article on, I completely forgot about Rolling Stone magazine. Nice job remembering antiGUY.

Posted by Dreamy Rover:
Don't need no Rolling Stone. Never liked it. A few music sites (including antiMUSIC) & GUITAR WORLD, GUITAR PLAYER, TOTAL GUITAR & all sorts of metal magazines are enough for me.

Posted by [fade]:
Rolling Stone has always sucked. I'll continue sticking to Kerrang and Revolver.

Posted by MY D I C K'S ON FIRE!!!:
F U C K!!! F U C K!!!

Posted by ??:
Universal owns them? Isn't that a conflict of interest? I mean how can you trust any review they write on a Universal band? At least now i know why Eminem was CD of the year, he's on Universal.

Posted by AliceCooperette:
Mini Story: When I started showing interest in music, the first time I picked up an issue of Rolling Stone, my MOTHER gave me a lecture about how they "are not what they seem," or something to those words. Even my mom knows they suck. And it's too expensive for a mag that's all ads. Maybe they'll go bankrupt.

Posted by Scott Stapps Ego:
Rolling Stone sucks. Always has, always will.

Posted by Batman:
But if you assume Rolling Stone is, was and always will suck, then you won't be disappointed no matter what they do.
