include Guitar World or Barely Legal...

I believe that RS does handle there business. The articles may be more
mainstream and there advertising may be trendy but everyone knows that
is what sells. As an up and coming writer I could only dream of writing

Trivial Pursuit. Like I said, I think it was the Harvard Lampoon who put
it out (they have a history of putting out perfect magazine parodies, they
did a Newsweek parody in around '84 ("Nuclear Arms and Terrific Legs: How
Waepons Buildup Threatens Today's Supermodels") that rocked.

SMIC: TK138, RS was always more or less a mainstream
magazine, meaning they cater to the general public and have a broad readership.
You hit exactly on my point though, they used to also give info on more
obscure stuff as well (albiet obscure music geared to hit the mainstream,
i don't think this is bad BTW) I would guess, although i have not read
it in wahile, that there are probably some album review and stuff of better
newer music tucked in there. back to my point, being a "mainstream" magazine
with a broad customer base they have great power to bring attention to
new bands and musicians. The one band I can think of they helped break
this year is the Yeah Yeah Yeah's possibly the worst shyte to hit the garage
punk scene yet. Worse because this was total and complete jumping on the
bandwagon on the part of RS as this patetic excuse for a band was allready
getting alot of attention from some name dropping by Julian Casablancas
garage-punk's ultimate tool. I really think RS could afford to add conetent
about some serious new music without comprmising sales, but what do I know
I am not a corporate scumbag who counts the bottom line.

article, too. I remember when RS was banned from my house for its "foul"
language. I read it anyway and learned a lot about politics, music and
culture. I like magazines such as Vanity Fair and GQ that publish interesting
and often thought-provoking articles. So what if they have ads? Everything
in America has advertising.
Posted by
Trendkill138: RS wasn't "always mainstream". When I
started reading it, back around '88/'89, I used to read about bands like
Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, and Soul Asylum long before they were famous.
I also learned a lot about the history of Rock because of it. Most of what
aG said is true, but despite all the teenybopper crap they've been churning
out the last couple of years, I still enjoy reading it.

Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!": You all got to hear this. I took the chance
to check out the article on the VMA's in the latest RS issue. It seems
that Eminem is continuing his feud with Moby. They showed a picture of
him giving the finger to Moby. Now, all Moby ever did was say that he doesn't
agree with what Eminem says, but that he'll fight to the death for his
right to say it. Obviously, despite his claims to the contrary, Eminem
does care about what other people think about him, or else he wouldn't
pick fights with them. Now get this, later after the show, Eminem approached
Avril Lavigne and said that he really respects her album. LOL It doesn't
stop there. After the show, many were invited to a P. Diddy party called
"The Greatest Party of all Time" in which everyone was informed in their
invitations to wear clothes by only the top designers and "not to bother
the sexy people". Now if P. Diddy isn't an example of someone who sucks
Satan's c0ck, then I don't know what it.

SMIC: Too True, RS, always mainstream, has degraded
itself to complete and utter irrelevancy. These days it has about as much
to do with music as MTV. Truly this is an unfortunate development. RS could
both cater to the lowest common denominator and act to educate people about
new and emerging music. They could keep Love on the cover but sneak in
a few meaningful articles about music between the gloss for the truly curiouos
teenybobbers. Sadly they dont. They will keep on pumping style over music
and yes Maxim and 17 are good comparisons.

dreibel: okay, if you guys want to be Hunter Thompson
and cameron Crowe, can I be Lester Bangs? :) But regarding hilarious, you
should've seen the war that went on between Rolling Stone and the band
Queen in the 1970s, RS were calling Queen "fascist" and dangerous, and
it was amazing seeing all the hatchet jobs on reviews of Queen performances
throughout the 70s. There was even one interview with the band in which
the interviewer made it clear right out front that he hated the band! Once
Freddie and Roger figured that out, they spent the rest of the interview
giving out nonsense answers to the little git. And RS was gullible enough
to print them! BTW, I think it was the Harvard Lampoon who put out this
hilarious sendup of the magazine in the 1980s, that included these faux
reveiws in which they slammed Jimi Hendrix ("slow death in a purple haze!
We've seen this "Jimi" Hendrix before and he's a total bore - he mumbles,
he sets his guitar on fire and, unlike a brother, he doesn't play the blues
- at all. When are the Monkees going to drop these loser opening acts and
find artists with real talent to open?" Great satire!

pick: Over the weekend, I was looking at US
magazine. Then I came back to my apartment and looked at my roomie's RS
and they really weren't all the different. Rolling Stone isn't horrible,
but it's really expensive, too ad-based and not on the cutting edge. That's
the problem with mass media today. Don't blame RS for being "sellouts"
or "posers" when every publication from the greatest newspaper on earth,
The New York Times, and the TV show "Good Day Live" adhere to the unwritten
standards of media. RS does review a ton of unorthodox albums and movies,
and, as always, the photography is excellent. Hunter Thompson and P.J.
Rourke were great in their time, but like all other journalists and news
people a new breed must emerge. Just look at what happened when Walter
Cronkite retired. He was the most trusted man in America and everyone thought
his departure was the death of TV news, but look at how the big three recovered.
What am I trying to say? All RS is trying to do is make money, and who
can fault them for that? They don't exploit children to do it, they don't
underpay their staff and they don't lowball every other magazines to get
ahead.

or both. Or maybe they themself actually work for Rolling Stone and are
trying to bash Nirvana since they're no longer "cool" like shock-monkey
Eminem. As for mister Slim Shady, I will admit that he has some lyrical
talent, but mostly wastes it on stupid songs talking about how bad he thinks
he is and how gay he thinks everyone else is. Some of his more serious
stuff (i.e. "Stan", "Cleaning out My Closet") are hard to really take seriously
at all when he comes out with songs like "Without Me" in which he does
nothing short of proclaiming himself the meaning of life and how everyone
else's lives would be completely empty without him.

the great musicians are either dead, corrupted, or too fu{king messed up
from drug use to go on making good music. and the new bands with any talent
at all, will never make a lasting name for themselves because there are
too many stupid a$$holes out there who continue and buy sh*t like eminem,
limp bizkit, and hole, for any real music to gain popularity. unless we
stop buying the talentless sh|t the record companies will never put out
any talented musicians work. fu{k this i'm going back to bed.

horny fat chick out to be some kind of hero or something. I shake my head
in amazement. I've got the '1000 yard stare'. I will now go on record...the
only good things about Rolling Stone EVER are as follows: A) Kurt Cobains'"Corporate
Magazine Still Suck" tshirt they ran on the cover after Nevermind broke.
And, B)Everything Hunter Thompson ever contributed. F**k Rolling Stone!
Viva La antiMUSIC!

Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!": Don't forget that this is the same magazine
that gave Nirvana's legendary Nevermind album 3 stars when it came out
(still does. No revisionism on that yet) and gave 4 stars to brain-dead
Andrew W.K.'s debut album (proclaiming him the "saviour of rock") while
also giving 2 stars to lyrical genius Aimee Mann's latest album. Not to
mention having never even reviewed Days of the New's incredible RED album.
They even just last year named Britney Spears as "The Coolest Person of
the Year" followed closely by Fred Durst and the overrated Alicia Keys,
but with no mention of the far superior India Arie. The same magazine that's
hailing garage-punk knock-off artists such as The Strokes the "saviours
of rock" (although I'll give them credit for The White Stripes, as they
are actually rather original). Rolling Stone hasn't always screwed up though.
They once proclaimed The Clash as the best new band of the year when punk
broke. But that's one of the VERY FEW exceptions. Might I also say that
of all the things I suggested posting an article on, I completely forgot
about Rolling Stone magazine. Nice job remembering antiGUY.
