Back to Part I

Due to the nature of the story that develops, (don’t worry I won’t give it away for those who haven’t seen the film yet), some of the scenes could have easily slipped into melodrama and become cheesy but the performances from Mandy Moore, Shane West and Peter Coyote (who plays Jamie’s father) help keep the story from suffering that fate. Although, Coyote plays a small part, this role is perhaps one of the best of his career.

Because of Mandy’s status as a pop singer, the film does contain the requisite scene where she sings. It happens about a third of the way through the film, during the performance of the school play. Unlike Spears, whose vocals fell flat, Mandy showcases her vocal ability and I found myself with a lot more respect for her talent than before. Let’s face it, you really can’t tell if a pop singer is genuinely talented due to the over production and liberal use of vocal effects in modern pop music. But here Moore sings her heart out to a simple piano ballad. Some may feel that this scene is a bit long but it really was well executed and did fit in with the storyline.

It’s true that some critics went into this movie with their minds already made up that they were going to hate it and Mandy Moore’s performance even before the beginning credits rolled. It’s either that or they were too shallow to pick up on the underlying themes of the film and the message it was trying to convey. But then again, when do we count on critics to get it right? However, some critics did get it; Roger Ebert proclaimed the film “a small treasure”. And the San Francisco Chronicle film critic, Octavio Roca, had this to say, “At a time when many Hollywood products portray adults as not terribly bright children, here is a story about intelligent high school students that deals with first love sweetly but also seriously. It is also beautifully acted… This ‘Walk’ will be tough to forget.”

For those who have read the novel, in many ways Karen Janszen, improved upon the story. As Nicholas Sparks says in the DVD commentary, He painted the broad strokes and she filled in the rest to help make it work on screen. There are some major variances aside from the fact that the original novel by Sparks was set in the 50’s and the movie takes place in the present. Janszen and Moore actually give the character of Jamie more depth than the “too sweet to be true” Jaime of the book and Shane West comes across as a more intelligent and conflicted Landon Carter. Plus the book was far more melodramatic. There are a few flaws in the film, some of the subplots could have been better developed, the humor interjected by Eric (Al Thompson) to provide levity to the story was a little overdone and a few clichés do manage to sneak in, but overall they don’t deride the movie. The ending may disappoint some but then again the novel’s ending was far more vague. They could have ended the movie one scene sooner and it would have been fine, since that scene does provide some major resolution to the story. If you go in with an open mind, you may discover that although some of themes in this film have been done many times before, they were tackled intelligently here and where the film could have taken the “She’s All That” turn and made Jamie the most popular girl in school as a result of her friendship with Landon, this story comes across more realistically by going in the opposite direction where it is Landon who changes in the end.

The bottom line is this is not your typical teen movie; it’s a bittersweet story about redemption, faith, hope, love and finding yourself and your place in the world. Yes, teenage girls will love this film but it should also be appealing to adults. Mandy Moore seemed as if she was born to play this role. If her pop music career ever falters she does have a promising career as an actress. Then again, it will be hard for her to top this role, so we will have to wait and see.

I readily admit, my enthusiasm for this movie may have come partly from the fact that I had such low expectations to begin with and I related to the story having known a person very similar to Jamie back in High School, but after watching and comparing this movie to other films I have seen lately, it really is one of best films I’ve seen this year. Why? Because unlike most films these days, you may actually end up taking something away from this movie; aside from just being entertained. Like a friend told me after she watched it, “A Walk to Remember” really hit her harder than she expected it to. Speaking as a tainted cynic, I know I personally got a lot more out of it than I bargained for. So, maybe you will to.

Before we get to the Fan Speak... Since so many people who have posted here genuinely loved “A Walk To Remember” one poster has asked that we provide a link for those who want Warner Brothers to release a special edition of the DVD with all of the deleted scenes (reportedly there were 36 total!) I think the hope is that WB will deliver a directors cut much like Cameron Crowe did with “Almost Famous” – added an extra half hour or so to the movie on the special edition. I know I’d like to see the extra scenes. So if you want to convince WB to release a special edition DVD click here to find out how you can help - aG

I aggree totally! I thought Brittany Spear's effors was not even in the same category as Mandy Moore's... I loved A walk to remember...I learnt so much from it...I walked away wanting to be a better person just as Landon did. Mandy did a great job...before hand I just saw her as a typical pop singer...now I think she is one of the most talented woman I have seen..her acting and singing in the movie certainly proved this to me!

I once told everyone I knew to avoid A Walk to Remember. After watching it myself last night, I feel ashamed to have moved against it. In many ways, I related to the character of Landon Carter. And his life's experience is bit like one of my own. I was deeply touched by the film, and I have had to rethink my life.

snif, if only life was as pretty as the movies... all this praise about a walk to remember. yes, it was cute, and well acted, and shane west, well, need more be said? but it wasn't the greatest that i've ever seen. it's kind of interesting how all of a sudden people have so much more respect for christian morals etc because a favorite pop idol plays a sweet preachers daughter. there were things to be desired in the way she played up the happy christian walk. sigh, yes, we are normal people, we are nice, some of the time, but we're not perfect. that's where god comes in. i guess i should be happy, any favorable publicity for christianity in the states is something to celebrate for.all those britney bashers out there, i mostly agree, but does it make you feel better to get it all out? or was that a waste of your precious time, too? after all, any time devoted to her at all is wasted isn't it? sigh. if only life was as pretty as the movies...

Mandy Moore is the best actress of all time, as well as singer. Her voice is amazing, and she is a good role model. She is not skanky, or slutty. She has morals and that is good to know. I AM A BRITNEY HATER!!!

I had no idea if Mandy Moore was a good singer or not or if she acted good but after watching A walk to remember I told my self wow! she has a great tallent in both things as a sibger and as an actress, next day I bought all her CD including the soundtrack of the movie which is asoum and the movie, Mandy Moore rocks! instead I fell sleep in crossroads, what the hell was that, I know, the wprst movie ever, well anyway Britney you suck as an actress and as a singer. your body and your face is all you've got. Mandy is also really pretty I mean natural beautiful non like out fake friend Britney

Posted by ~~hE@vEn~$Ent~~:
I totally agree with antiGUY. I love A Walk To Remember. Mandy Moore is great while Crossroads and Britney just plain (there's no other way to put it) sucked. I feel cheated out of a half hour of my life (I sa ya half hour because i left the theatre, it was so bad). I mean, she's nothing but an airhead! I think Britney should definitely stay away from acting. Hell, she should stay away from the entire entertainment business to begin with so we don't have to even listen to her voice or see her face. Mandy, on the other hand, was awesome and should continue. I hope she gets another movie instead of some dumb blonde (no offense meant to other blondes)who can't do anything rather than look pretty. I mean, puh-leeze. Give me a break. drunk n roach is right: Britney is gonna need a new job cuz nothing is gonna work out for her in the near future. Or the future period.

Posted by Evy:
I loved the movie. I've seen it now more times then I can remember. Honestly, Mandy Moore rocked. I didnt even know who Shane West was until this movie and I fell in love with him. Now I want to see everything he's ever been in. The boy can act.

Posted by DRUNK N ROACH:
damn this b*tch made me look at her more differently than i ever did b4...Mandy, never liked her and maybe her pop songs i will never respect but her film is something that most of us has the balls to say it, it was f*cking good and i feel retarded saying it....dammit i hate when i'm wrong. As for britney....that girl is gonna need a new job cuz nothing is gonna work out for her for the near future

Posted by yeah, i just love these movies!:
isn't this great. how we can all just get along and talk about these two great girls, it just makes me all warm and tingly inside. ok so f*ck that. Any way they were both shallow a$$ fake pop singers, creating(a term i use loosely since they had little to do with it)horrible music. i must admit i hate chic flicks and i'm a girl, but mandy should stick to acting, and britney should jump off a cliff(preferably one without water beneath, because i wouldn't want her to float) if she ever does jump/fall off a cliff i'll be the first to go spit on her pathetic talentless mutilated body. that's not music that sh*t, and there is no arguing that so don't even try it you sappy a$$ b*tches. i'll come throughthat screen and rip out you tongue. have a beatiful day, i love you all!

Posted by Elle:
I haven't seen "A walk", but after the reviews, I think I will! Crossroads - I'm gonna give it a miss, it sounds as dull as HELL! Mandy's song "Candy" was really catchy, her vocals were good, her other music didn't really have much for me, though it's in a new league to Britney!

Posted by skaterboi:
Wow, I love AWTR so much! It's one of the best movie. Crossroads sucks...no substance at all. Mandy Moore is a great actress and a great singer. I love her songs especially Cry and Only Hope. Anyways, AWTR is a 5 star movie while Crossroads is -5 dust movie! :-P

Posted by chris:
i agree, mandy moore's performace in a walk to remember was truly memorable!!!!

Dear MIOJO PITEL DABES, One word sweetie... valium. Lots and lots of valium. Keep up the hate!

Posted by MIOJO PITEL DABES MADE IN BRAZIL!!:
I hate Britney Spears!!! she is all fake like those girls on Baywatch, I mean, she lives for the plastic surgery! her songs are so so soooooo shallow that it makes me sick! her songs don't have THE FEELING. about Mandy's music, I think the same thing, but about her act: OH MY GOD WHAT WAS THAT? she's brilliant as actress and she's not "turbineted" and shallow as Britney ( God I really do hate her)and I really do think that she could leeve her pop star career and just act ( cause her songs are really decadent)

Posted by The Nomad:
The only thing that I liked about Britney Spears was the scene in the Austin Powers 3 movie (the weird piece of crap that was). She was shaking her stuff, and then you find out she's a femme-bot...and then her head explodes. That has got to be the greatest moment in movie history. Now if she did more roles like that, I'd be able to tolerate her more.

Posted by sucker:
both movies were crap shut up!

Posted by LeeLee:
I've been wanting to see 'A Walk to Remember'. The book was pretty good, and from what I have heard, the movie is good as well. I never liked Mandy's music, but she does'nt seem like a bad person.

Posted by Nicole:
I remember that movie!

Posted by VampireRyan:
Anybody remember this one movie called "The Wizard"? In The Wizard, the kids went on a road trip to a video game championship where Nintendo unveiled Mario 3 at the end of the flick. In Crossroads, Britney and friends go on a road trip to an audition where Britney sings her new song at the end of the movie. That movie was just an excuse to try and save her dying career

Posted by pick:
I'm talking about a complete change in people. I realize movies make people think and react. In fact, JFK and The Deer Hunter are two prime examples. However, if you allow one movie or song to reshape your entire ideals that's a bit too far-fetched. Music feeds my emotions and helps me through tough times but I don't structure my entire existence around it.

Posted by Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
Just take a look at how "Apocalypse Now" made people think about Vietnam as well as the human condition.

Posted by Josh:
Pick. I have to disagree with your last comment. True classic movies make you think and sometimes during the thinking process you discover something about yourself that can completly change you attitude. Some movies have the power to change who you are. peace.

Posted by Nicole:
Not letting my love for Mandy and hat for britney cloud my judgement, I loved a walk to remember. I never went to see or rent crossroads because i was told britney was as melodramatic and overacting as they come, and as pointed out, plays a character way too much like her. Stupid, Teeny, and wanted by the leading man always. Also, I think Mandy Moore is a better singer/actress, because she is more pure of one. You've never seen her, or will see her, in half the outfits and "positions" britney has been seen in.

Posted by aG:
I don't know pick, people can be inspired by a film or book. If it says something to them and makes them realize something then it can change them. Music changes people everyday. Ask almost every serious musician and they will tell you that it was a certain song, band or album that inspired them to become musicians so you see the music did change them and I think the same can happen with films or books if it touches someone at a certain level. I'm as cynical as the next guys (more so probably) but I can see that.

People who feel movies change emotions or lives need to check themselves.

okay...i saw a walk to remember in the movie theaters thinking it was going to be such a major chick flick it wasn't even funny...but after it was over with...it kind of stuck with me because it wasn't JUST a chick flick. it was much more than that...and i loved the movie to no extent. i love mandy moore...i think she is a great singer...but when i saw her act in this movie i realized how good an actor she can be. i was just amazed at how well she did. i just saw crossroads, i didn't want to see it because i knew britney spears would ruin it..but the movie itself was good...but britney could not act worht anything. i mean she can't even sing. my mom wasted 3.25 on a really lousy movie. but anyway i agree with antiGUY because he makes such a strong view point...and i love his view point. A walk to remember really did a number on me and i don't think i will ever forget the movie for as long as i live...it was just so inspiring...and i loved how it dealt with faith in God, and how he has a plan for each and every one of us...

Posted by princess:
I saw A Walk to Remember at the movies, not really knowing what to expect. The previews made it look like it'd be pretty good, but I wasn't really a Mandy Moore fan. Anywayz, I saw it once, and it became my favorite movie! It was soooooo good! I loved it! It also gave me respect for Mandy Moore. She really surprised me with how good of an actress she is. My sister got the soundtrack (to AWTR), and she's a really good singer too! I think I'm a Mandy Moore fan now! I was actually thinking about renting Crossroads, but with all that I've read, I don't think I'll waste my money.

Posted by Chris:
You know I'm a guy and all and I don't for this movies. And I went to watch crossroads in theaters when it was finished I was so pissed cause I felt like I wasted my money on watching it! And then my little sister and I watched mandy's movie and you know what I was amazed it was a great movie and I loved it! Overall Mandy is the best at being an actor, singer, and rolemodel! come on britney spears just dances and shakes her stuff.. but atleast Mandy can keep her pants on!

Posted by Krisy:
I loved a walk to remember! It taught alot to me about life and love. It truly is amazing and wonderful... as to "crossroads" there is no contest.

Posted by pick:
If Britney Spears stars in another movie, I vow to write my own script! Hey, if she can star in a major-motion picture then I can pen one!

Posted by twix_h:
after watching "a walk" i've found new respect for mandy.she did great in the movie and the movie is truly inspiring.those who haven't seen it yet, you should watch it!

Posted by Adriana:
I admit, i didn't give "A Walk To Remember", a chance at first. I never liked mandy moore before the movie, so i wanted nothing to do with it. However my boyfriend and I kept hearing such good thing's about it from both our co-worker's, we decided to rent it. I was definatley suprised! I really, really enjoyed this movie, and i cried like a mother at the end. I seriously like mandy moore now. As an actress she was this character, and shane west was fantastic. I took the movie to my mom's house last weekend and her and my dad also enjoyed the movie. I wouldn't call it a chick flick or a teen movie...more of an adult themed film with teenagers acting in it. About crossroads...I took my 5 year old sister to see it, and she fell asleep half-way during the film, so we left. Enough said!

Posted by TheyCallMeMellowYellow..:
Britney bites. Like, please, who is she kidding? Britney is a teenage bubble gum actor while Mandy Moore is more than just a pretty face, she is an actor with substance. Something many actors in Hollywood try to fake, but few own. I hope to see Mandy Moore in many more movie's like AWTR in the future.

Posted by Devin:
Wow, I totally agree. AWTR is an awesome movie, while Crossroads was not worth the 9 bucks I paid to see it.

Posted by Angie:
i very much agree with whoever wrote this...I looked at Britney in Crossroads, which I saw for the first time last night, and I thought to myself...If she looks like that...how is she not popular in school?!!? haha. I also thought it was awful how they made her sing like 10 million times throughout the movie when it only fit in one, and that was when he wrote that music for her. And actually, they shouldn't have put that in because it made me realize how bad of a singer she really is! 'A Walk To Remember' is honestly one of the best movies I have seen in my lifetime. Shane and Mandy had an AMAZING onscreen connection and they both did an amazing acting job! This movie did for me what all great movies should, it made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me smile, and actually it even gave me hope. Well...that's all i have to say!! Thx 4 listenin!!

Posted by Angela627:
Yep, sadly enough Britney has another movie, it's suppose to be a NASCAR movie (im hoping she'll get run over by a car, but sadly i don't think it'll happen). But on the brighter side, Mandy has completed an independent film since AWTR, is shooting another film in Canada right now and will do another film in the fall. If that makes anyone feel better.

Posted by Ross:
Are you serious Mr Huh? Man that sucks. That was funny zee. but I agree! But I figured if someone like Anti-Guy who is about as Anti-pop as you can get says she did a good job maybe it was worth seeing so I rented the flick because of what was said here and it was really good, I totally have a new opinion of Mandy Moore. Yeah, I won't be buying her pop CD's but I will go see her movies if she makes more. Shes is so out of character for what you think of a popstar and she does pull it off like Anti-Guy said, I totally forgot it was Mandy Moore on screen. My girlfriend loves me renting the movie without her proding too! There was some build up here but it did deliver, so what they hell give it a try dude, it's only 3 bucks and an an hour and a half.

Posted byMr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
Also, I hate to say this, but Britney is already set to star in another movie come soon.

Posted byzee:
This is totally insane. You people have almost got me convinced to rent a movie starring Mandy Moore, who I have despised unreservedly since the first time I heard her sing. Totally unnatural. On the other hand, it's nice to know I predicted exactly what Crossroads would be without ever seeing it.

Posted byBrittany:
BRITNEY SPEARS SUCKED

Posted byBrittany:
A WAlk to Remember was the best movie in the world its so good, and sad i liked it a lot!

Posted bypick:
I will make one rant. Ms. Spears should never have been allowed to act in a feature film. To think of all the promising actresses at Julliard, Millikin, NYU, Second City, etc., who can't catch a break...watching Britney land an inane role makes me wince.

Posted bypick:
aG, this was a nice change of pace from your usual stuff. Although I enjoy your "What The Hell?" op-ed's, it's good to read something off-kilter. However, I'm sitting here about ready to pull my hair out! Maybe it's due to my still being tired, but skimming through posts made by high school girls isn't my idea of a fun time. This is a, ahem, SUGGESTION to all the new posters: when you iterate your posts, please refrain from borrowing other people's material. Unless your post is in response to an earlier post, come up with something fresh.

This movie changed my life. I regained my faith that I had lost long ago through it. Keep in mind I am a 15 year old guy, so this ain't my typical genre. Oh yeah, one moe thing, to all teen guys who have not seen this movie, watch it with your girlfriend and a pencil and notebook to take notes :)

Klutz is right, AWTR did not encourage kids to do worse, unlike other teen movies. Also, I've heard from some people that this movie changed their lives. It may have changed mine..but I'm not realizing that now. Anyway, I'll be planning on buying the DVD soon. These are my 2 cents.

Posted byKlutz:
Hey I love your artilce. A Walk to Remember did beat Crossroads. Brittany came out of that movie hoping to get more fans and hoping to promote herself..Mandy on the other hand came out of that movie hoping that people will understand the meaning of life. There are so many teen movies out there that just encourage kids to do worse..A Walk to Remember did not do that.

Posted byteacherz pet:
I so agree with you! a walk to remember wasnt just another teen movie it had a meaning to it. a walk to remeber can change alot of peoples lives and crossroads was just a movie with a bad actress..compare it to mandys movie and we know who won. i think your article was great! :)

I LOVED A Walk To Remember....Mandy Moore and Shane West did an excellent job! I am 29 and am almost embarassedto say that I have seen this movie at least 7 times this week! It really hit me hard...and I think it is just a great movie.

I read this and didn't post anything because like greenmuse said it actually made me want to see this movie so i rented it last night and you were right ag it was nothing like the trailers made it out to be, some stupid teen romance or chic flick. I admit it, I actually rewound it and watched again it was a really moving story. Mandy Moore blew me away, even after reading your positive review I was still amazed at her acting. I couldn't imagine any other young actress doing that part justice they way Mandy Moore did. So count me in, you convinced me. No ranting here just a thank you for mentioning this movie because I don't think I would have bothered watching it otherwise.

the things anitguy suffers for his art, seeing the britney sears film*shudders* you are more of a man than i care to be.after reading this id actully give it a chance, when i first saw the trailers for it,i instantly thoughts "another version of "shes all that""maybe ill plunk down the three frogskins and rent the thing.and theat movie "shes all that"sucked bigger than anything has sucked before,i got dragged to the theater to see it,and am still bitter about it.the girl in the movie was hot before freddy prinze got to her, what kinda plot was that grrr
