Bowie Calls The Shots
Billboard reports: Having scored numerous hits, reinvented himself several times and amassed truckloads of credibility, David Bowie already was an icon of rock music and pop culture by the time the '80s were half over.

So it's a bit odd to hear him relay that for the better part of the past 15 years, when he finished a record, he was more or less treated no differently than the latest alt-rock signee or hip-hop newcomer on his label, Virgin. Like them, he would have to get worked into the company's release schedule.
Regardless of clout or status, his records would be released based on Virgin's time schedule, not his.

Well, not anymore. Thanks to his recent deal with Columbia -- through which he created his own label, ISO -- Bowie isn't doing too much waiting these days.
Under the agreement, Columbia is issuing Bowie's albums soon after they're finished. "Reality," issued Sept. 16, arrives only slightly more than one year after "Heathen," his debut for Columbia. .- Click Here for the Full Story

Battle of the Beach Boys
AP reports: There was no "Fun, Fun, Fun" at the Supreme Court Monday for a founding member of the Beach Boys.

The justices refused to hear an appeal from guitarist Alan Jardine, who fought a court order that barred him from using the term "Beach Boys" in his touring band. The dispute arose from a split among the surviving members of the California surf band.

In 1998, Jardine began touring as "Beach Boys Family and Friends" and as other names that included "Beach Boys."

He owns a quarter of the corporation formed to hold the Beach Boys trademark, but did not have the company's permission to use the band name. Jardine contends he formed his separate touring band after former bandmate Mike Love refused to tour with him.

Stones Shortchange Retail
Reuters Reports: If music retailers needed another warning that their future is imperiled from slackening sales, veteran rockers the Rolling Stones have given it to them.

The British band snubbed U.S. record stores late last week by anointing mass market electronics chain Best Buy Co. Inc. as the only seller of its new DVD, "Four Flicks," for four months, and independent record store owners are seething.

From Nov. 11, through the holiday rush, traditional music retailers will be forced to watch as potential customers flock to Best Buy to snap up the 4-disc package being sold for $29.99.

As the music industry reels from plunging sales due in part to Internet piracy, they also are facing heightened competition from mass merchants like Best Buy and Target Corp. that control about 55 percent of U.S. music sales. ..- Click Here for the Full Story

**Mail Bag**
Letters to the editor.  The letters are piling up. So instead of our weekly "letter of the week" we'll publish letters as they come in.

From TFGL4LIFE
I just found your site from the Google news page and love it but I can't understand why you call it anti-music.

Response: Aside from the next letter, this is probably one of the most common questions we get emailed about. I might have answered it here in the past but it gets asked again. The name is meant partially to be ironic. A music site called antiMUSIC. But the name originally came from a line in the book "Broken Record: The Inside Story of the Grammy Awards" by Henry Schipper. He recounts in the book that the Academy and their awards program were initially set up as the old-line music biz's answer to the growth of Rock n' Roll, a form of music they considered "Anti-Music".  Seemed like an appropriate name for us and a celebration of rock.

Six Feet Under
A mere week after releasing their crushing new album Bringer Of Blood, Tampa's SIX FEET UNDER has emerged with a tidal wave of impact on the charts & television.  The album debuted at #22 on Billboard's Heatseeker Chart, #43 on their Top Hard Music Albums chart (the highest debuting independent release), and #22 on the Hard Music Core Stores chart.

On the radio front, Bringer Of Blood debuted as #1 Most Added at CMJ Loud Rock & CMJ Crucial Spins, #2 Most Added at FMQB's Metal Detector, and #3 at R&R Specialty, with good reason.  The follow-up to 2001's ultra-brutal True Carnage, Bringer Of
Blood sees the band honing their skills as songwriters, while lyrically pushing the boundaries of subject matter aligned with the genre.  Extreme Metal pioneer vocalist Chris Barnes expresses social commentary regarding Freedom of Speech & Choice, while weaving his trademark brand of macabre storytelling, making Bringer Of Blood as profound lyrically as it is musically.

Add a visual element, and you have a recipe for mass destruction.  The band's current video for "Amerika The Brutal" is receiving massive recurrent airplay on MTV's Headbangers Ball program, and has been nominated in the 'Best Video' category
in FUSE TV's Viewer's Choice polls.

Cyndi Lauper Returns
CYNDI LAUPER RETURNS TO EPIC WITH STANDARDS ALBUM, AT LAST

Due out November 18th, album teams Lauper with legendary producer Russ Titelman; Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder also contribute

Now, Cyndi takes the latest step in her artistic evolution by tackling a collection of standards, many of which she has been listening to for her entire life. At Last sees
Cyndi putting her unmistakable stamp on classics such as the Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody, the Burt Bacharach/Hal David gem Walk On By, the Smokey Robinson classic You Really Got A Hold On Me, the title track, popularized by Etta James, and Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs' Stay, (later covered by The Four Seasons and The Hollies, among others). Cyndi's interpretations not only approach these songs from a fresh angle, they also confirm her place as one of popular music's greatest vocalists of the past three decades... as if there were any doubt.

At Last also teams Cyndi up with Tony Bennett on Makin' Whoopee, a song that has been recorded by no less than Louis Armstrong, Rosemary Clooney, Nat King Cole, Ray
Charles and Bennett himself. Meanwhile, Stevie Wonder contributes his unmistakable harmonica playing to the R&B classic Until You Come Back To Me (which has been recorded by Stevie himself, and Aretha Franklin, among others).

'Til You Come Back To Me (featuring Stevie Wonder)
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
