Korn Bashes Metallica
There doesn't seem to be a lack of rock stars tongue lashing Metallica these days.

A BLABBERMOUTH.NET exclusive: KORN vocalist Jonathan Davis recently gave Swedish journalist Martin Carlsson his opinion on METALLICA's latest album "St. Anger". "I think it's the s***tiest thing I ever heard in my life!" he said. "I respect those guys immensely since some of those songs are great. Some of that s*** sounds like it's beginners' s***. I understand they're going for a new raw and heavy sound, but that's just s***. I don't get it. I like some of the songs, it's cool and it's not [me] talking s*** [about them] at all, but the production is just horrible. I know what they're trying to get across, but Lars [Ulrich]'s snare drum is the most irritating thing I've heard in my whole life.".-- Click Here for the Full Story

Courtney Vs. Cobain's Mom
MTV reports: Courtney Love's fight for custody of her 11-year-old daughter, Frances Bean, turned ugly this week, as the troubled rock star engaged in a scuffle on Tuesday with late husband Kurt Cobain's mother outside a Los Angeles courtroom. The skirmish came as Love continues her fight to regain custody of Frances Bean, who was taken by child services a week after the singer's overdose on the prescription painkiller OxyContin earlier this month.

Though Love had initially claimed to have been on the prescription anti-anxiety drug Xanax, she admits in the current issue of People magazine, on newsstands Friday (October 24), that she took an overdose of the painkiller Oxycontin.

Rock Hall KISS-off
Rockdirt reports: Josh Bell of Las Vegas Weekly caught up with Kiss bassist and vocalist Gene Simmons and asked him about the group's chances of making it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "With all due respect to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's a popcorn fart for us," Simmons sneered. "It doesn't mean a lot because it's not really representative of the American lifestyle. It's not democratic. It certainly doesn't represent the people. I happen to agree that a lot of the acts that are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame deserve to be there, because they sold a lot of records and the people loved them. But there are some acts that I look at, and I'm going, 'Why are they there if they only have one gold record? What happened to the American way: Of the people, for the people, by the people?' The truth is that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a political organization. A few people get together in a back room and they vote on who they think should go in there. But it's not direct democracy. Did anybody ever ask you who should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? It's funny, nobody ever asked me either. So how does that work?". -Click Here for the Full Story

Ozzy: Bob Daisley Won't Quit
Former OZZY OSBOURNE bandmembers Bob Daisley (bass) and Lee Kerslake (drums) have vowed to continue their 20-year battle regarding royalties and proper credits on the early OZZY albums "Blizzard Of Ozz" (1980) and "Diary Of A Madman"  (1981), despite a court ruling earlier this week that upheld the dismissal of their lawsuit against Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne.

The lawsuit, filed against the Osbournes in 1998, was dismissed last year by the United States District Court in Los Angeles, and this week the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld the dismissal, ruling that Ozzy does not owe any royalties or credit to the musicians, who were let go in 1981.

According to Daisley, however, not all hope is lost. "It's early days regarding this bogus ruling but it's STILL not over yet," he said in an online posting. "We will be seeking further legal advice from our tenacious lawyers."

In a 2002 interview with Launch, Daisley explained how things got to this point. "Lee Kerslake and myself were fired after recording the 'Diary Of A Madman' album. During 1980 and the beginning of 1981, contracts were drawn up and went backwards and forwards from our lawyers to their lawyers. We were told to keep working, that it would be eventually all sorted out. The contracts were actually physical, but not actually signed. And then when we got fired, we brought up the situation of royalties, and they just said, 'Oh, well. End of story - you're out of the band. Off you go.'"

The Osbournes removed the playing of Daisley and Kerslake from the 2002 reissues of "Blizzard Of Ozz" and "Diary Of A Madman", replacing the original recordings with tracks from Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin, Ozzy's bassist and drummer at the time.

Since their initial release 23 years ago, "Blizzard Of Ozz" and  "Diary Of A Madman" have sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

Death Metal Prison Break
siN's metal news reports: The Norwegian media and blabbermouth.net are reporting that legendary black metal BURZUM mastermind Varg Vikernes, failed to return after a short leave from his prison in Vestfold, Norway. He is currently serving a 21-year jail sentence for the murder of MAYHEM guitarist Euronmyous, and the burning of several churches in Norway. He was let out for a couple days off, and was due to return by midnight Saturday(gotta love the Norwegian legal system), and failed to do so. The police have no information on his whereabouts. Blabbermouth.net has around 15 links, all in Norwegian(so about 0.5% of our viewers) about the story, go check them out if you'd like.

**UPDATE** Varg Vikernes has been caught after a small car chase outside Oslo:

"A day after he failed to return to prison as scheduled following a short leave, Varg Vikernes was captured by the Norwegian police on a highway outside the country's capital.

Vikernes was taken into custody at 12:45 a.m. Monday morning (October 27) after police in Oslo received information from police in Romerike that the fugitive was traveling in a car on the E6 road to Oslo.

"We signaled for Vikernes to stop, but when he didn't, we were forced to box his car in between two police vehicles. There was a was dent [to the car]," officer Vider Hjulstad told NTB.

UK Can Pay Too
AP reports: A file-sharing network on Friday said it has signed a deal with EMI Music to put a "majority" of the music publisher's catalog online for users in Europe.

British company Wippit Ltd. said the deal with EMI will boost the number of tracks it offers online by about 100,000.

Wippit's chief executive and founder, Paul Myers, told The Associated Press that his company signed a deal last month with EMI, whose artists range from the Rolling Stones to Coldplay.

Wippit distributes authorized copies of songs on its file-sharing network, allowing subscribers to download an unlimited number of tracks for an annual fee of $49, or $6.50 a month.

Consumers can burn the songs onto CDs, transfer them to portable music players supporting Windows Media Audio or store them on a computer. Customers keep the music even after their subscription ends, Myers added.

A Wippit user gets a license for each track downloaded. Myers said the user can download the same track onto different computers by entering the license details each time, but cannot share the track with other users or convert the music file into MP3 format.

Still Stroking
Billboard reports: The Strokes want it understood that despite their global fame, they are still a young band capable of the occasional misstep.

"If we sold no records the first time, we obviously wouldn't be in this situation," frontman Julian Casablancas says.

"We'll make some mistakes along the way. But you know, apparently people seem to like what we do."

Indeed, the group's 2001 debut, "Is This It," has sold more than 900,000 units in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Global sales are at 2 million copies, according to RCA.The album spent 58 weeks on the Billboard 200, spawned three hits on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and put the Strokes at the epicenter of a much-trumpeted wave of new American rock bands.

As a result, the quartet's new album, "Room on Fire," is perhaps the most anticipated sophomore rock album in recent memory and certainly one of RCA's biggest releases of the year. It arrives Oct. 28 in the U.S. and was launched Oct. 20 in other markets.

If the reaction to the new wave-influenced single "12:51" is any indication, fans like what they hear. The song is No. 20 in its sixth week on Modern Rock Tracks and has also been a top seller at Apple's iTunes Music Store, where it was launched in September. .- Click Here for the Full Story

Fu Manchu Get Indie Rebirth
Billboard reports: The Northwest Alliance of Independent Labels is set to bow an in-house rock imprint called Cube Farm.

NAIL, which is owned by Portland, Ore.-based Allegro Corp., has long specialized in the distribution of left-of-center rock, but the new endeavor marks its first attempt to fill its own pipeline.

Cube Farm debuts Nov. 4 with the re-release of two albums by San Clemente, Calif., stoner-rock behemoth Fu Manchu: "No One Rides for Free" and "Daredevil."

NAIL president Alicia J. Rose, who heads A&R for Cube Farm, says the imprint's first releases are the product of "a combination licensing/co-release" deal with Los Angeles-based Bong Load Custom Records.

Bong Load, operated by producers Rob Schnapf and Tom Rothrock, made a splash during the '90s with its release of Beck's breakthrough single, "Loser." But the label largely has been dormant in recent years.

"As a label, Bong Load is probably not going to exist per se, so they'll co-release with us," Rose says.

Cube Farm hopes to release six to 10 albums a year. "I'm looking for classic stoner-rock sorts of bands," Rose says. "I want to find bands that will do well on a national level." .-Click Here for the Full Story
