GNR New Song Leak Update
siN's metal news reports: Following up our news story late last week about DJ Eddie Trunk that played the rumored new GUNS N ROSES track called I.R.S., the radio host has updated his site with the following about what happened:

"I have been HAMMERED with email from all over the globe regarding my exclusive airing of the new Guns & Roses track IRS this past Friday. This has become a MAJOR story, and I'm trying to get back to as many people as I can, but simply can not respond to everybody. Here is the latest on what went down:

My friend and occasional co-host Mike Piazza paid a visit to the show close to Midnight. As you could imagine, Mike gets a tremendous amount of fan mail, and being a hard rock and G&R fan, lot's of CDs in his mail. Mike came in with a CD that was labeled as new Guns. It was packaged anonymously. Mike wasn't sure if it was legit, but we put it on the air, and the phones went nuts. The song was called IRS and sounded like Illusion era G&R, with a few modern touches (loops, samples in intro). I don't think it was 100% complete, but sounded pretty close. Questions of how legit this recording was were quickly squashed when I started to get calls and email from the bands management on Saturday. This was VERY legit! A few facts here:

It will NOT be played again! Now that I know it was legit, I have co-operated completely with the bands management, and have been asked to turn over the CD, which I did. I no longer have it. It was not labeled in anyway, it was just a burned CDR.

The song will not be included on the replay show. I have been forced to edit it out (another reason why my show is best heard live!). There are legal issues if you don't comply, and I will be served with papers to prohibit the repeated airing even if I still had it and wanted to!! It will not be heard again until it is an official release. -- Read More of This Story

Lars Gets Cut-Out
Blabbermouth reports: METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich's collaboration with WU-TANG's RZA on the score to director Quentin Tarantino's long-awaited new film, "Kill Bill: Volume 1", is not expected to appear on the motion picture's commercially released soundtrack album, due on September 23. No reason was given for the exclusion of Ulrich's contributions from the final product.

"Kill Bill" was previously thought to be the first soundtrack for which Ulrich had been asked to help write original music.

Dave Navarro Wants Madonna
Launch reports: Dave Navarro performed at last week's MTV Video Music Awards with Christina Aguilera and was there in person to witness Madonna's smooches with Aguilera and Britney Spears.

Although he has worked with his fair share of hot female pop stars, he is currently eyeing his next gal. "At this point I'd like to do a collaboration with Madonna," Navarro said. "I think that would be exciting. So far I've been able to collaborate with Christina Aguilera and Michelle Branch and Mariah Carey. I think Madonna's, you know, next on my list. And Madonna actually looks younger than Britney and Christina. It's amazing."

QOTSA Dollar Single
VH1 reports: In the year of 50 Cent and Chingy, Queens of the Stone Age will cash in on the popularity of money themes with the mouthful of a third single "You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire."

The scathing metal tune, which first appeared on 1999's Desert Sessions, Vol. 5, was written by singer/guitarist Josh Homme and Mario Lalli of stoner-rock pioneers Fatso Jetson, although bassist Nick Oliveri's ferocious voice sings it.

"I don't usually sing other people's songs, but I was honored to on this one," Oliveri said last week at Radio City Music Hall, a day before Queens won Best Special Effects in a Video at the Video Music Awards. "It kind of grooves, but it's heavy. It's a punch in the face. It's one of those 'we're gonna be making our next record soon' singles.""

Downloading 101
AP reports: Students arriving for fall classes at colleges across the country are facing new restrictions and stern warnings to discourage the swapping of pirated music and movies over high-speed campus Internet connections.

Some schools are even using software to choke the amount of data that can flow in or out of a computer when students use Kazaa and other file-sharing programs.

And in a new approach disclosed Tuesday, at least a dozen universities are exploring ways to offer students a fee-based music service whose fees could be bundled with room and board costs.

At least 10 universities have been served with subpoenas demanding they help the recording industry identify possible targets of such lawsuits, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an online civil liberties group.

Overall, RIAA President Cary Sherman said he is gratified by the attention copyright violations are getting on campuses. .- Click Here for the Full Story

Are CD's History?
Hollywood Reporter reports:  Hollywood will win the war against illegal downloading but the battlefield will be littered with casualties, including the DVD and CD formats as physical means of distributing video and audio, according to a Forrester Research study released Tuesday.

The study predicts that in five years, CDs and DVDs will start to go the way of the vinyl LP as 33% of music sales and 19% of home video revenue shifts to streaming and downloading.

Part of that stems from the continued proliferation of illegal file trading, which has caused an estimated $700 million of lost CD sales since 1999. But it will be due more so to efforts by the studios, cable companies and telcos to finally deliver legitimate alternatives like video-on-demand, Forrester researcher Josh Bernoff said. - Click Here for Full Story

Then again, you should be able to find studies published in the 60's that said we would have a society with technology like the Jetsons in the year 2000. Instead we got Yuppies in SUVs.

What are they up to now special: Simply Red
It seems Simply Red have been "holden back the years" pretty well according to this report from Pollstar:

It seems that whenever Simply Red decide to tour, they tour big. Already this year they've been packing arenas all over the globe, and have big plans to keep on doing just that for the remainder of 2003.

Recently added shows find the blue-eyed soul band tackling a few concerts in South Africa, Brazil and Mexico; a couple gigs in the States; and a whole nother round of arena shows in the U.K.

It's been three years between tours, but Simply Red continue to be a popular draw in their homecountry, as well as around the world. A run around U.K. arenas earlier this spring saw the band playing to full houses.. - Click Here for the Full Story
