Super Breast and Streaker
AP reports: For the humdrum New England
Patriots and Carolina Panthers, putting on a show to match the glitz, glitter
and star power of the rest of Super Bowl Sunday was no easy task.
Typical of America's biggest unofficial holiday, the game was only the icing on an over-the-top extravaganza. There was a gleaming new $450 million stadium to show off, a slew of pricey new ads, and Beyonce, Janet Jackson and P. Diddy to share the field.
The biggest cliffhanger of the week wasn't who would win, but whether Janet's brother, Michael, would show up. He didn't, but Justin Timberlake did, as the surprise guest at the halftime show.
Then came another halftime surprise: A streaker trotted out to the middle of the field before the third-quarter kickoff. While the CBS cameras focused elsewhere, police gave chase. New England linebacker Matt Chatham leveled the man, who was hogtied and carried off the field. - Click Here for the Full Story
So much for the Van Hagar reunion but a part of Janet's anatomy made a special appearance.
Official Responses to Justin's derobing of Jackson during the half time flash dance
CBS: "CBS deeply regrets the incident," said CBS spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade. "The moment did not conform to CBS' broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended."
Justin Timberlake: "I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl," Timberlake said in a statement. "It was not intentional and is regrettable."
NFL: We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show," Joe Browne, NFL executive vice president, said. "They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show. It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."
MTV said that the incident was "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional."
Well, how do you top the kiss? We know now.
Linkin Park Sucks?
Blabbermouth reports: Chris Riemenschneider
of Minneapolis' Star Tribune reviewed LINKIN PARK's concert at the Xcel
Energy Center in St. Paul on Saturday night (Jan. 31).
"The Southern California sextet is not yet a convincing arena-rock headliner," he wrote. "Even at a short 90 minutes, its set was still only about half-great. For every one of the group's ecstatically received radio hits, there was another tune that dragged and/or showcased the melodramatic aspects of its misery-loving catharsis rock.
"Not only did LINKIN PARK come up short with many of its not-so-famous tunes, it stumbled by playing several dullards during the show's one long encore."- Click Here for the Full Story

Def Jam Scam
Reuters reports: Def Jam is being accused
of manipulating Nielsen SoundScan's sales data in a $22 million lawsuit
filed by a former music executive.
In the suit, filed Jan. 26 in the Supreme Court of New York County, sales executive Theressa Rossi says she was coerced to serve as "front woman" for Giaco Entertainment, a New York marketing firm hired by Def Jam.
Rossi, a Billboard charts manager from 1986-1994, alleges that Giaco artificially inflated sales figures reported to SoundScan, resulting in distorted computerized reports. Rossi claims Def Jam offered free CDs to independent retail stores in exchange for their agreeing to repeatedly swipe the CDs across scanning machines to boost sales figures.
"Def Jam provided Giaco with free records for independent retailers to scan more records than actually sold," the complaint states. It says Giaco allegedly threatened to delay album shipments to non-complying retailers.
Named as defendants are UMG, Def Jam, Giaco president Joe Giaco and Def Jam execs Kevin Liles and Mignon Espy. - Click Here for the Full Story
Yes, but metal still out sold rap, even with the books cooked. You wouldn't know that from watching a certain music television station.

Rolling Stone Doesn't Matter
To Yngwie
Blabbermouth reports: Legendary Swedish
axeman Yngwie Malmsteen recently spoke to Classic Rock Revisited about
Rolling Stone magazine's much-criticized list of the 100 greatest guitarists
of all time. Asked for his reaction to the list, and more precisely his
not being on it, Yngwie said, "I get that question every day. When somebody
votes for me then that is beautiful and if they don't then that is okay
too. I don't understand how that was compiled. I don't need to pat myself
on the back. You should see my living room. It looks like I am a f***ing
golf player. I have all the awards that you could shake a stick at. I have
been voted the #1 guitar player in Japan more than any other living guitar
player. It does not matter to me. If I wake up and I don't play good that
day, then that is what matters. What I have done before is not the point.
The point is that I have to know that I have done my best. I need to know
that I played a good solo, or wrote a good song or played a good show
that is how I look at it. I have been nominated for Grammys and it is all
great but that does not matter so much to me. I am not at all upset at
Rolling Stone. At the same time, if I win something then it is very nice
but if I don't then tomorrow is another day. This is not a sport." -

Great White Fire Suit
Blabbermouth reports: The Associated Press
is reporting that nearly $6,000 raised at a concert to benefit victims
of The Station nightclub fire is sitting in a Boston bank account while
the Massachusetts attorney general's office reviews a lawsuit disputing
who should receive the funds.
The parties involved in the lawsuit now agree that the money should be distributed to all Massachusetts residents affected by the fire. But while the suit is being reviewed, the funds cannot legally be distributed.
The suit, filed by Arthur "Jamie" Conway, a 22-year-old freelance pianist who suffered burns and lung damage in the fire, claims the March 8 concert at a Marshfield, Mass., nightclub was staged to raise money for his medical costs.
But DRAW THE LINE, the Boston-based rock band that headlined the show, said the event was intended to benefit all Massachusetts victims of the Feb. 20 blaze that killed 100 people and injured more than 200 others.- Click Here for the Full Story

We're Not Gonna Take It Again
BW&BK reports: TWISTED SISTER are
reportedly in the planning stages to redo their legendary Stay Hungry album
from 1984. Although the band had released two records prior (1982's Under
The Blade, 1983's You Can't Stop Rock N' Roll), it would be Stay Hungry
that make the Long Island, NY five-piece a household name. Stay Hungry
hit #15 in the U.S. (selling over 2 million copies) and #34 in the UK.
The first single, We're Not Gonna Take It' went to #21 on the Billboard
singles charts and turned the band into an MTV sensation.-

Browne Out
Billboard reports: Two seminal rock 'n'
roll veterans have left their longtime labels.
Jackson Browne has left Elektra and is talking to several labels; Patti Smith is preparing to release her first album for Columbia after 29 years on Arista.
"I've had conversations with a couple of different people, but it's still not time" to make a decision, Browne says. "I have such difficulty talking to record companies before there's music to be played." Browne's contract was up with Elektra after the release of 2003's "Night Ride Home," which has sold 139,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
"The fact that I was basically on one label for my entire career used to be something I was proud about, but I don't necessarily think it's something" to strive for again, he says. "There were times when you were about to release an album, and then there would be some corporate shift and the five or six people you were working with were gone. It would have been easier to go through the process of finding a new label each time."
He expects to announce his new affiliation by year's end. - Click Here for the Full Story
Labels Want to Crack DRM
codes?
Billboard reports: The music industry
is pushing bitter technology rivals -- most notably Microsoft and Apple
-- to shake hands in the interest of promoting digital downloads, Billboard
has learned.
Hardware makers and digital format developers, including many traditional adversaries, are engaged in private talks aimed at meeting the music industry's goal of compatibility among competing digital music devices by 2005.
Executives with knowledge of the talks say much of the focus is on transcoding -- the process of converting a file from one format to another.
It is impossible right now for consumers to directly convert a file protected by one type of digital rights management (DRM) into another type of secure file.
"Everyone is motivated to crack this," says Amanda Marks, senior VP of Universal Music Group's eLabs division. "We have to throw whatever weight we can into this issue."
While this is not specifically an Apple and Microsoft matter, many of the practical issues center on compatibility between the two tech giants.
Music from Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store -- the leading seller of digital tracks -- cannot be transferred directly to any portable device other than the iPod. Those who compete with iPod by and large support Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format.
At the same time, tracks from every other legitimate service -- a field that includes Napster, MusicMatch, RealNetworks, Wal-Mart and Sony -- are incompatible with the iPod - Click Here for the Full Story
Oh the sweet irony, labels pushing to make it easier to copy digital music.
Hole Lotta Love
Billboard reports: A week away from her
solo debut, Courtney Love is still making headlines -- but not for her
music.
It has been six years since her former band Hole's last album. She subsequently has sued her former label parent, Universal Music Group, and the members of her deceased husband's band, Nirvana.
Love has testified against major-label practices before the California Senate, disbanded Hole, made some movies, been arrested a few times, gone to rehab and, not incidentally, made her first solo album.
"America's Sweetheart" comes out Feb. 10 on Virgin Records.
The next day, Feb. 11, Love is headed back to court: She faces two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance.
The question remains whether her cult of personality has eclipsed her musical career. - Click Here for the Full Story

Hay, the frontman for the 1980s Australian band Men at Work, said he is
launching his longest North American solo tour in more than a decade.
The series of more than 60 concerts started in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., on Thursday with plans to run through October, hitting cities including Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New York and Nashville.
Hay showcases his new songs along with old hits like "Down Under," "Overkill" and "Who Can It Be Now?" in acoustic-heavy performances that blend music with comedy and storytelling. - Click Here for the Full Story

Manilow Hospitalized
AP reports: Barry Manilow was hospitalized
after suffering from chest pain due to stress, his publicist said.
Manilow, 57, was hospitalized Saturday after returning to his home from New York, where he and co-writer Bruce Sussman had taken part in "two of the most grueling days of arbitration" in a lawsuit over rights to the musical "Harmony," publicist Jerry J. Sharell said.
"Harmony" was supposed to run in Philadelphia but was canceled in November because it fell short of its capitalization. A 1997 production at the La Jolla Playhouse in California also faltered and closed after mixed reviews. - Click Here for the Full Story
