The Band in a Box
pitchfork reports: As both Bob Dylan's
longtime backing group and their own critically acclaimed entity, The Band
helped define the back-to-basics aesthetic of the late 1960s/early 70s
musical landscape. Following (or in reaction to) the sonic experimentation
of the psychedelic rock movement, the group helped popularize a raw folk-rock
sound characterized by rich textures and Americana sensibilities. While
the name The Band may have seemed pretentious in other hands, the individual
artistry of members Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel,
and Garth Hudson came together to form a true musical brotherhood that
depended on each individual to carry the musical weight. Now, nearly 40
years after the forming, The Band are set to release a five-disc box set
commemorating their potent contributions to rock history.
Slated for release in May 2005 through Capitol/EMI, the still untitled set will feature more than 100 songs [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story
Luna Breakup
pitchfork reports: Breakups are a bitch,
and no more so than to the music-obsessed. Jesus, my dad still gets misty
when you mention The Beatles. Well, after 12 years and seven studio albums,
Luna frontman Dean Wareham recently announced that the quartet will be
severing musical ties in early 2005, and while the band's website offers
a handy list of explanations for the breakup-- both factual and facetious--
Pitchfork recently spoke with Wareham to get a more personal account of
the impending split.
"It's an interesting question. People are always like 'why?,' Wareham laughed. "I'm still doing interviews with people who are asking me why did Galaxie 500 break up. You know, that's just what bands do, and I think that is sort of the basic reason. You start a band, it's not going to last forever, and at a certain point you've got to stop... unless you're Metallica, or R.E.M., or the Rolling Stones, where they're not just bands, they're like multi-million dollar corporations [see full story for more of the interview]- Click Here for the Full Story

thefestfl.com reports: [A reminder]It
is on! Work has started on THE FEST 3- "Triple Threat in 3D". The dates
have been set for Oct 29th, 30th and 31st. Once again it will be held in
the city that loves to host a party, Gainesville FL. The same format will
be in effect, but we are adding an extra day of debauchery to continue
through Halloween. Three days, five venues, about 70 or so bands, and the
three day pass will still remain the low price of $25 in advance and $40
weekend of. If you are not familiar with the concept behind THE FEST it
is pretty easy. You come and run your ass all over Gainesville and see
a ton of bands. You party your ass off, stay up late, meet crazy people,
dance, sing along, party with old and new friends, see some of the bands
passed out in the streets, and then leave wondering, why can't this s***
happen everyday of our lives. So, start training your liver, get a sleep
deprivation tank, sport a tude, and tell your family and work that you
might not be making it back. [a regular reader sent this in and said everyone
in the area should check it out. Sounds like a blast. See the full story
