MySpace A&R
PR reports: Feel - good rockers, The Summer Obsession, a band who owe a great deal to everyone's friend "Tom." They were discovered in 2004 by Myspace founder Tom Anderson and became one of the first Myspace Music bands. The initial Myspace buzz propelled the band forward and by 2005 they were entering the studio with Josh Abraham (Pink, Velvet Revolver.) The Summer Obsession will release their debut album, This is Where You Belong, on Virgin Records with just a few days of summer to spare (August 29th). The album is an upbeat soundtrack for the hard times. Musically inspired by extensive and varied pop and rock influences including The Police, Rage Against the Machine and Blink-182, the songwriting pulls from the band's own personal experiences as well as stories from their fan mail. THIS IS WHERE YOU BELONG captures the warmth and carefree essence of summer's dog days for those times when life gets dark and cold. Zutons Soph
PR reports: 24 year-old, Singer/guitarist, David McCabe is feeling good about feeling bad. The songs for The Zutons' second album, Tired Of Hangin' Around, have been pouring out of him - 'and loads of them are about giving yourself a bit of a hard time,' the band's frontman says cheerfully, ''cause you've gone out and got drunk or let someone down. But it's looking at it from a sarcastic point of view.'

It's Alright is a case in point. Full of the energetic rock'n'soul that helped The Zutons land five Top 40 singles (Pressure Point, You Will You Won't, Remember Me, Don't Ever Think and Confusion) from their 2004 debut Who Killed The Zutons? it's a barrelling song with clattering percussion about 'being defiant in the face of your hangover. It's the new Dirty Dancehall.' Album in stores September 19, 2006, a preview to be had at the full story link.- Click Here for the Full Story

Creative Bankruptcy
antiMusic reports: Today we welcome a brand new columnist to antiMusic, Felicity Estrin. She kicks things off with this look at the major label creative machine, or rather the creative bankruptcy behind The Machine. Here is a sample from the full column:

In recent months it has occurred to me that it's an interesting irony that the very mechanism the BMG/RCA execs have set up to make themselves even richer has wound up painfully exposing their own creative bankruptcy. The raison d'etre of American Idol has been to sell records, and in as mass a quantity as possible, and they've certainly succeeded at that. But somewhere along the way, as the show has become a mega-phenomenon, something has gone a bit awry for The Machine.

American Idol has attracted millions of viewers internationally. Young idealistic singers go on with (often) tons of talent, singing material that is actually worth listening to, get tons of exposure and, in the process, everyone's hopes up. Then they're released to the so-called creative team of the BMG group and the recycled pseudo-music that ensues disappoints so many nearly every time. Literally millions of people, who have become invested in the success of their favorites, are left scratching their heads and asking, "What the Hell happened there?" [She's just getting started, whether you like American Idol or not, this affects almost all genres of music, so click the full story link to read the entire article]
